Chapter 8 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Before Michael’s hand could make contact with my arm, a deafening roar echoed from the sky.
Three unmarked, black military helicopters descended over the tree line, hovering directly over the estate’s pristine lawn. The powerful downwash of the rotors kicked up a storm of dirt and gravel, forcing Michael and the security guards to shield their eyes.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" a voice boomed from a megaphone attached to the lead helicopter.
Dozens of tactical agents dressed in full body armor rappelled down from the skies, their weapons drawn and lasers instantly painting the chests of Julian Vance’s security team. The guards dropped their weapons immediately, throwing their hands into the air.
From the side of the driveway, a fleet of federal vehicles smashed through the estate’s iron gates, blocking any chance of escape.
Victoria Vance stepped out of the lead suburban, dressed in a sharp grey trench coat, flanked by the Federal Regional Director. She looked at her brother with a cold, triumphant smile. "Hello, Julian. I believe you’re familiar with the federal statutes regarding human trafficking and illegal medical syndicates."
Julian collapsed against his cane, his face entirely drained of color. "Victoria... you... you can't prove anything."
"We don't need to," I said, stepping forward and handing my laptop directly to the lead federal agent. "The live routing data and the signed acquisition contracts are all right there. Broadcasted directly to the federal server for the last twenty minutes."
Michael turned to run toward the back of the mansion, but two tactical agents tackled him violently into the gravel, slamming his face into the stones.

"Evelyn! Please!" Michael screamed, his voice muffled by the dirt as the handcuffs clicked into place. "We’re a family! Think of Lily!"
"You stopped being a father the moment you turned her childhood into a laboratory experiment, Michael," I said coldly, looking down at him without a shred of emotion. "Enjoy your new cage."
