Chapter 6 - The Velvet Hammer Strikes Back

I sat in the dim light of the cabin, the glowing laptop screen reflecting off my tears. I was alone, exhausted, and marked for death by a billionaire and my own husband. But as I looked over at Lily’s peaceful, sleeping face, the fear inside me transformed into something lethal.

They thought I was a victim. They thought I would run until I was caught. They didn't know that a mother's love is the most ruthless force on earth.

I didn't call the local police. If Julian Vance had the power to manipulate a city hospital, he had the power to intercept a local police report. Instead, I dialed a number I had memorized from my days working as a legal assistant before I married Michael: Victoria Vance.

Victoria was Julian Vance’s estranged older sister, a fierce, brilliant corporate defense attorney who had spent a decade trying to expose her brother’s corrupt medical empire after he cut her out of the family legacy.

"Who is this?" Victoria’s sharp, aristocratic voice demanded on the first ring.

"Victoria, my name is Evelyn Granger," I said, my voice steady and cold. "I have the unredacted digital ledger for The Phoenix Genesis. I have your brother’s signature on a contract to harvest a five-year-old child's bone marrow. And I have the routing numbers for his Swiss bank accounts."

Silence hung over the line for three agonizing seconds before Victoria spoke, her tone completely changing. "Where are you, Evelyn?"

"I’m in a safe location. But I don't want to hide anymore, Victoria. I want to destroy him."

"Julian is arriving at his private estate in Duluth tonight to oversee the extraction team," Victoria said, her voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "He thinks he’s untouchable because he controls the local authorities. But he doesn't control the Federal Attorney General. I’ve been building a RICO case against his syndicate for five years. Your ledger is the missing smoking gun."

"What do we do?" I asked.

"We give him exactly what he wants," Victoria replied, a dark smile evident in her voice. "We set the trap. You’re going to show up at that estate tomorrow morning. And I’m going to bring the entire weight of the federal government with me."
