Chapter 5 - The Safehouse and the Secret Ledger

I drove for three hours without looking back, disabling my phone’s GPS and ignoring the dashboard clock. I needed somewhere completely disconnected from my life with Michael. I drove straight to an abandoned, rural cabin in Northern Minnesota that had belonged to my late father—a place Michael had never visited and openly despised for its lack of luxury.

By afternoon, Lily was asleep on the old velvet sofa, wrapped in a thick wool blanket. The cabin was freezing, but the isolation felt like a protective shield.

With my trembling hands, I opened the laptop I had managed to toss into my purse before leaving the house. I connected to a secure, public Wi-Fi hotspot using a burner VPN I had established months ago for my freelance design business.

I needed to access Michael’s digital footprint. He thought I was just a naive housewife who didn't understand technology, but I was the one who had set up our home network server.

I bypassed our shared cloud drive and dug deep into the hidden root directories of his personal backup drive. There, hidden inside a folder masked as “Tax Receipts 2022,” I found it.

A massive, encrypted digital ledger titled “The Phoenix Genesis.”

As I cracked the basic password—which was simply Lily’s birthday inverted—the true horror of my marriage unfolded on the screen. Michael wasn't an independent logistics consultant. He was a high-level broker for a rogue medical syndicate known as 'Aegis Bio-Tech.'

The ledger detailed years of payments, medical scans of Lily’s bone structure, and a legally binding contract signed by Michael and a billionaire pharmaceutical mogul named Julian Vance. Vance was dying of a degenerative bone disease, and Lily’s bone marrow was his only cure.

The contract stated that upon her fifth birthday, Lily would be permanently delivered to a private medical facility in International Waters off the coast of Vancouver. The price for my daughter's life? Twenty million dollars.

But the final entry in the ledger, dated just two days ago, made my breath hitch in my throat.

July 15th. That was in exactly forty-eight hours. Michael hadn't just planned to sell our daughter; he had already signed my death warrant.
