Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Medical Files

The revelation sent my mind spinning into a dark abyss of confusion. If Lily had never been sick, why was Michael systematically treating her skin and hair with a highly experimental, black-market drug? And why was he timing it down to the exact second?
I refused to leave Lily's side at the hospital. By morning, the lab results for her blood work came back, and the pediatrician, Dr. Evans, entered the room with a look of profound bewilderment on his face.
"Evelyn," Dr. Evans said, closing the electronic chart. "I’ve been Lily’s doctor since she was born. Or at least, I thought I was. We just ran a comprehensive DNA and blood-panel analysis to see how much of the chemical she absorbed."
"And?" I pressed, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the hospital bed rail.
"The blood profile we just pulled does not match Lily’s medical records from the last four years," Dr. Evans whispered, dropping a bombshell. "The white counts, the genetic markers... they are entirely different. Evelyn, the child sitting in this bed is biologically your daughter, but someone has been systematically altering her cellular data using advanced clinical therapy. These 'bath games' weren't baths. They were forced, highly controlled chemical treatments designed to suppress her natural DNA expression."
I stared at Lily, who was quietly coloring a picture of a butterfly, seemingly oblivious to the medical horror story surrounding her.
"Why would Michael do that?" I breathed.
Before Dr. Evans could answer, my phone buzzed in my purse. It was an restricted number. I answered it, my voice trembling. "Hello?"
"Evelyn," a woman’s voice whispered on the other end. She sounded frantic, breathing heavily. "You don't know me, but my name is Dr. Aris Thorne. I was the lead researcher at Vanguard Diagnostics before your husband had me fired. You need to get Lily out of that hospital right now."

"Who are you? What did my husband do to my daughter?" I demanded, stepping away from the bed so Lily wouldn't hear.
"Michael didn't do this to save Lily, Evelyn. He did it to sell her," Aris choked out a sob. "Lily has an incredibly rare, multi-million-dollar genetic mutation—a perfect universal cellular compatibility. Her bone marrow and tissue can heal almost any degenerative disease without rejection. Michael discovered it during a routine checkup when she was a baby. He’s been keeping her existence a secret from the global medical black market, using those chemical baths to hide her true genetic markers until she turned five. Yesterday was her fifth birthday. The contract is finalized. They are coming to take her."
