Chapter 2 - The Raid and the Revelation

"Upstairs! They're upstairs!" I screamed, abandoning my hiding spot and throwing the bathroom door wide open.
Michael scrambled backward, his face instantly turning a ghostly shade of white as three armed police officers rushed into the cramped space. "Get your hands up! Step away from the child!" the lead officer shouted, his weapon drawn.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Michael yelled, his voice cracking with a mixture of rage and terror. "This is my daughter! I’m giving her a bath!"
"Mommy!" Lily wailed, reaching out her soapy, dripping arms toward me.
I lunged past the officers, grabbing a clean towel from the rack and ripping Lily out of the water. I held her damp, shivering body against my chest, shielding her from the chaos. The faint, sweet, chemical smell from the water filled my nostrils, making my head spin.
An officer forced Michael onto the tiled floor, slamming his hands behind his back and clicking the handcuffs into place. "Michael Granger, you are under arrest."
As they dragged him down the stairs, Michael glared back at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying intensity. "You've ruined everything, Evelyn! You don't know what you've done! You've killed her!"
The paramedics arrived seconds later, rushing Lily and me into the back of an ambulance. In the sterile, bright lights of the emergency room, a team of pediatric doctors immediately began rinsing Lily's skin and taking blood samples.
I sat beside her bed, holding her tiny hand, when the lead detective, a stern woman named Detective Miller, stepped into the curtained cubicle. She held a clear evidence bag containing the plastic cup and the container from beneath our bathroom sink.
"Mrs. Granger," Detective Miller said quietly. "We’ve run an express lab analysis on the substance your husband was using on your daughter. It isn't what we initially feared, but it is highly illegal, and it points to a much deeper, darker conspiracy."
I looked at the white powder in the bag. "What is it?"
"It’s an experimental, unapproved immunosuppressant block and gene-altering topical compound," Miller explained, her eyes fixed on mine. "And according to the medical registry, it’s a drug used exclusively to treat patients who have undergone illegal, off-the-books organ transplants. Mrs. Granger... did Lily have a medical procedure we don't know about?"

My heart stopped. "No. Never. She’s never even broken a bone."
"Then we have a massive problem," Detective Miller replied. "Because your husband’s phone records just showed a text message sent ten minutes before his arrest. He wired five hundred thousand dollars to a private clinic in Switzerland. The text read: 'The mother knows. Prepare the extraction.'"
