Chapter 10 - The Chapter of Our Own Making

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Maine sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and deep violet. The air was crisp, clean, and filled with the gentle, rhythmic sound of the Atlantic waves crashing against the rocks below.

It was 6:00 p.m. Bath time.

But there were no timers. No paper cups. No clinical white powders hidden beneath the sink.

I filled the porcelain tub with warm water, pouring in a generous amount of lavender-scented bubble solution until the surface was covered in a thick, fluffy cloud of foam.

"Lily! Time for your bath, sweetie!" I called out.

Lily came running into the bathroom, giggling as she kicked off her sneakers. She jumped into the tub, immediately splashing a wave of bubbles into the air, her face lit up with absolute joy. She grabbed a plastic toy boat and began navigating it through the soap suds.

"Look, Mommy! The boat is saving the dolphins!" she cheered, looking up at me with eyes that were completely bright, trusting, and free of fear.

I sat on the tiled floor beside the tub, resting my chin on my hands, a deep, victorious warmth spreading through my chest. For years, I had been made to feel like a bystander in my own home, manipulated by a husband who used my love for our daughter as a weapon against us.

But today, we were whole. We were safe. The secrets were gone, replaced by the beautiful, ordinary reality of a mother and her child.

I reached into the bubbles, gently washing her curls, leaning down to kiss the top of her wet head.

"I love you, Lily," I whispered against her hair.

"I love you too, Mommy," she replied, splashing a tiny bit of water at me with a mischievous grin. "This is the best game ever."

I smiled, wiping a stray bubble from my cheek as I looked out the bathroom window at the endless, open ocean. The dark night was officially over, and the best chapters of our lives were finally being written.
