Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Past

With the legal battles finally settled and the corrupt elements of my family permanently removed, I turned my complete attention to repairing the damage done to Mara's life.
Using my personal fortune, I fully cleared her father's medical debts, restored his professional license, and funded the construction of a state-of-the-art community health clinic in Chicago named in his honor.
One rainy Friday evening, while the boys were playing with their nanny in the loft's playroom, I invited Mara out to the balcony overlooking the shimmering city lights.
The air was crisp and cool, but a outdoor heating lamp kept the terrace warm and comfortable.
Mara leaned against the glass railing, watching the yellow taxis navigate the streets below. "It feels like a dream, Julian. Two months ago, I was sleeping in a storage room, wondering how I was going to feed my children tomorrow."
I stepped up behind her, gently wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder. She leaned back against me, letting out a long, peaceful sigh.
"I'm sorry it took me six years to find you, Mara," I whispered into her ear. "I'm sorry I ever doubted your love for a single second."
She turned around in my arms, reaching up to gently trace the sharp line of my jaw with her soft fingers. "You didn't know, Julian. You were lied to just like I was. But you believed in us the moment you saw their faces in that bathroom mirror."
"I knew the moment I saw their eyes," I said softly, looking deep into her green eyes. "Because every time I looked into those boys' eyes, I saw you."
I reached into my inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
Mara gasped softly, her hands flying to her mouth as tears welled in her eyes.
Inside the box sat a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a rare green emerald surrounded by four sparkling diamonds—representing Mara and our four sons.

"There are no lawyers behind this ring, Mara," I said, kneeling down on one knee on the rain-kissed balcony. "There is no corporate merger, no family pressure, and no lies. Just a man who has loved you since the day he met you, begging for a second chance to be your husband and the father our boys deserve."
"Yes," Mara sobbed happily, dropping to her knees beside me and throwing her arms around my neck. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"
