Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gala

Friday evening marked the annual Metropolitan Business Alliance Gala at the Plaza Hotel—an elite event where New York's most powerful families gathered to flex their wealth and influence.
My mother, wearing an emerald green gown, stood near the main stage alongside Brielle Cartwright and her father, billionaire real estate tycoon Harrison Cartwright. They were giving an interview to major business news reporters, attempting to spin the cancellation of our engagement as a "temporary scheduling conflict."
"Julian is currently managing an urgent international asset restructuring," Victoria lied smoothly into the news microphones, her face a mask of effortless sophistication. "The wedding date will be announced before the end of the month."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom swung open.
I walked down the central aisle wearing a tailored black tuxedo. Beside me walked Mara, looking breathtaking in a floor-length navy blue silk dress that highlighted her elegance and natural beauty.
Behind us walked Marcus Vance, carrying a leather briefcase packed with legal evidence, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the NYPD Financial Crimes Division.
The chatter in the ballroom died down instantly. Flashbulbs began flashing furiously as reporters rushed toward us.
"Julian!" Victoria gasped, her eyes wide with shock as she stepped off the stage. "What is the meaning of this spectacle?!"
I stopped directly in front of her, the entire room holding its breath.
"I'm here to set the record straight, Mother," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the grand ballroom speaker system. "There will be no wedding with Brielle Cartwright. Not now, not ever."
"Julian, shut your mouth!" Harrison Cartwright barked, stepping forward aggressively. "You will not disrespect my daughter in public!"
"Your daughter was fully aware that my mother was using forged documents and offshore bribes to hide my four sons from me, Harrison," I replied calmly, pulling a stack of certified affidavits from Marcus's briefcase and handing them directly to the surrounding news reporters.
Gasps erupted across the room as reporters began scanning the documents.
"These are certified bank transfers and criminal affidavits proving that Victoria Whitaker used company funds to harass, intimidate, and illegally manipulate birth records of four young boys," I announced loudly.
Victoria’s face transformed into a mask of pure terror. She reached out, trying to grab my arm. "Julian... please... we can fix this in private—"
"It's over, Victoria," I said, stepping back into Mara's side and taking her hand tightly. "The board of directors has called an emergency meeting for midnight. You have been officially removed as Chairperson of Whitaker Enterprises."

Officer Ramirez stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Victoria Whitaker, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit fraud, and witness intimidation."
As the handcuffs clicked around her wrists in front of New York's entire high society, Victoria screamed out in desperation, her high-society legacy crumbling into dust before the flashing cameras.
