Chapter 7 - THE HEARING

The courtroom was packed.
Daniel arrived with his attorneys.
Vivian sat behind him.
Rachel sat alone.
Celeste entered last.
She carried a folder.
Daniel looked at her.
His expression turned murderous.
Celeste didn't flinch.
The judge reviewed the evidence.
Hospital records.
Call logs.
Photographs.
Financial transfers.
Forged documents.
Then the Caribbean footage.
Daniel's own voice echoed through the courtroom.
“Once Grace signs, everything belongs to me.”
His attorney objected.
The judge overruled him.
Then came the most damaging evidence.
The call records.
Twenty calls from me.
Zero responses from Daniel.
The prosecutor asked:
“Where were you during those calls?”
Daniel said:
“Business meetings.”
Michael presented the location data.
Daniel was at a resort.
Then the social media photographs.
Then the hotel receipts.
Then the bank transfers.
The story collapsed.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
He looked at me.
“Grace, I love our son.”
I looked back.
“You didn't answer when he needed you.”
His voice cracked.
“I didn't know.”
“You knew.”
The judge ordered temporary primary custody to me.
Daniel received limited visitation.
The financial investigation continued.
Then the prosecutor made an announcement.
Daniel wasn't being investigated only for fraud.
He was being investigated for money laundering.
The room erupted.
Vivian stood.
“You're destroying our family!”
I turned toward her.
“No.”
I said quietly:
“You did that when you taught your son that consequences were for other people.”
She stared at me.
Then the bailiff approached Daniel.

He was escorted away.
For the first time since Noah was born, I breathed without fear.
