Chapter 2 - THE CALL

Before Noah was born, I had spent years defending other people's mistakes.

Corporate disputes.

Fraud cases.

Contract battles.

I knew exactly how powerful people behaved when they believed money could erase consequences.

Daniel knew that too.

That's why he had spent years convincing me to stop practicing law.

“You work too much.”

“You need to relax.”

“We're building a family.”

Eventually, I believed him.

Until Noah was born.

The morning after we brought our son home, Daniel announced his trip.

“Three days.”

I stared at him.

“You're leaving tomorrow?”

“There are investors flying in.”

“You can postpone.”

“No.”

I was exhausted.

My incision hurt.

Noah barely slept.

“I need you.”

Daniel sighed.

“Grace, millions are at stake.”

I looked at him.

“And our son?”

He kissed my forehead.

“I'll be back before you know it.”

He wasn't.

Two days later, Noah developed a fever.

Then he stopped feeding.

Then his breathing changed.

I called Daniel.

Nothing.

I called again.

Nothing.

Twenty calls.

Voicemail.

Then my phone died.

I discovered the car keys were gone.

My wallet was missing.

I couldn't even order a ride.

I panicked.

Noah's skin was burning.

I carried him into the hallway.

“Help!”

I screamed.

Mrs. Alvarez opened her door.

She was eighty-one.

She took one look at Noah and grabbed her phone.

“Ambulance.”

That single word changed everything.

At the hospital, doctors diagnosed Noah with a severe infection.

The next twelve hours were the longest of my life.

Then Vivian arrived.

She didn't ask whether Noah would survive.

She asked:

“Does Daniel know?”

I stared.

“Yes.”

“You shouldn't make him look irresponsible.”

“My son is in intensive care.”

She adjusted her pearls.

“Men make mistakes.”

I laughed bitterly.

“This isn't a mistake.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You need to protect your marriage.”

Then my phone came alive.

Photographs.

Daniel.

Celeste.

Beach.

Hotel.

Champagne.

The caption:

Finally free.

I saved everything.

Vivian watched me.

“What are you doing?”

“Preparing.”

“For what?”

I looked at her.

“The end.”

That night, I called my former law partner, Michael Grant.

He answered immediately.

“Grace?”

“I need help.”

“What happened?”

“My husband abandoned me and our newborn while he vacationed with another woman.”

Silence.

Then:

“Send me everything.”

I did.

Ten minutes later, he called.

“Grace, this is bigger than infidelity.”

“What do you mean?”

“Daniel has been moving assets.”

My stomach tightened.

“What assets?”

“The company.”

I sat upright.

“Explain.”

“Money has been transferred into several entities.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Michael paused.

“But one of the entities is connected to Celeste.”

The room went cold.

My husband hadn't simply cheated.

He had been preparing something.
