Chapter 18 - THE LAST MORGAN

The investigation exploded across the country.
Victor was arrested.
His accounts were frozen.
His companies collapsed.
But Noah remained missing.
For three days, there was no trace.
Grace barely slept.
Daniel stayed beside her.
Richard blamed himself.
Elena refused to leave.
Then Michael found the connection.
"Grace."
She looked up.
"What?"
"The trust."
"What about it?"
"It's not Victor's."
"Then whose?"
Michael placed a file on the table.
"Your grandfather's."
Grace stared.
"But he's dead."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Then how?"
"Because someone has been using his identity."
Grace froze.
The file contained transactions.
All signed with her grandfather's digital authorization.
The latest transaction was yesterday.
The recipient:
Morgan Foundation — Private Estate.
Grace knew the address.
Her grandfather's old mansion.
The mansion where she had spent summers as a child.
They drove there.
Inside, everything was exactly as she remembered.
Paintings.
Books.
The grand staircase.
Then Grace noticed something.
A portrait.
Her grandfather.
Standing beside a young woman.
Grace approached.
It wasn't her mother.
It was someone else.
A woman with Grace's eyes.
Michael examined the frame.
"There's a hidden compartment."
They opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Addressed to Grace.
If you're reading this, your father failed.
Grace's hands shook.
She continued.
The family business was never meant to belong to Richard.
Michael read over her shoulder.
It was meant to belong to Elena.
Grace looked at her mother.
Elena went pale.
"What?"
The letter continued.
Elena was the true heir. Richard was the protector.
Grace stared.
Her entire family history had been reversed.
Then came the final paragraph.
But there is one person I never trusted.
The name was blacked out.
Michael held the page under special light.
Letters appeared.
ELENA.
Grace looked at her mother.
Elena stepped backward.
"No."
Grace's voice trembled.
"Did you betray Grandfather?"
"No."
"Then why is your name here?"
Elena looked toward Richard.
Richard closed his eyes.
"Because your mother made a deal."
Grace turned.
"What deal?"
Richard whispered:
"She traded your life for mine."
Grace's heart stopped.
Elena began crying.
"I had no choice."
Grace shook her head.
"You always say that."
Suddenly, a phone rang.
Noah's voice came through.
"Mom?"
Grace nearly collapsed.
"Noah!"
"Mommy..."
Then another voice.
A man's voice.
Old.
Calm.
"Hello, Grace."
She froze.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it in childhood.
At family dinners.
In old recordings.
Her grandfather.
But he was dead.
The voice continued.
"Come to the house."
Grace whispered:
"Grandfather?"
The line went silent.
Then the mansion doors locked.
Every window slammed shut.
A speaker activated.
"Welcome home, Grace."
The voice laughed.
May you like
And Grace finally understood.
Her grandfather hadn't died.
