Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO CAME HOME SMILING

Five days after abandoning me and our newborn son, Daniel walked through our front door sunburned, smiling, and carrying designer shopping bags from a Caribbean vacation with another woman.

“Babe, you should've seen the beaches.”

His voice floated through the house like nothing had happened.

Like he hadn't ignored twenty calls.

Like he hadn't left me alone three days after childbirth.

Like our son hadn't been rushed into intensive care while Daniel drank champagne beside Celeste Morgan.

I stood at the top of the stairs.

I didn't answer.

Daniel dropped his suitcase.

“Grace?”

He looked toward the nursery.

Then he frowned.

“Where's Noah?”

That question almost made me laugh.

Almost.

Instead, I walked downstairs.

Daniel looked at me carefully.

“You look terrible.”

I stopped.

“You've been gone five days.”

“I told you. Business.”

“You went to the Caribbean.”

His smile disappeared.

“How did you—”

I held up my phone.

On the screen was a photograph of him kissing Celeste.

“You're terrible at hiding things.”

He glanced at the photograph.

Then at me.

“You've been spying on me?”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You were broadcasting it.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“Grace, this isn't what you think.”

“My son nearly died.”

Silence.

“He had a fever. He couldn't breathe. I called you twenty times.”

Daniel looked away.

“I was in meetings.”

“You were on a beach.”

“I didn't know Noah was seriously ill.”

“You knew.”

His jaw tightened.

“You're making this emotional.”

Something inside me went still.

“Emotional?”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“Right.”

He looked toward the nursery again.

“Where is he?”

“At the hospital.”

His expression finally changed.

“What?”

“He's been there for four days.”

Daniel's face drained of color.

“You didn't tell me?”

“I tried.”

“Why didn't you call my mother?”

I stared at him.

“I did.”

He reached for his phone.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because Vivian told me not to embarrass you.”

His head snapped toward me.

“What?”

I walked past him.

He followed.

“Grace, wait.”

I stopped at the front door.

“I spent five days thinking my husband had abandoned his sick child.”

“I didn't abandon anyone.”

“You chose a vacation.”

“It was business.”

I turned.

“Then explain Celeste.”

He had no answer.

That was the moment I understood something.

Daniel wasn't sorry.

He was afraid.

Not of losing me.

Of what I might know.

I pulled a folder from my bag.

His eyes followed it.

“What is that?”

“Evidence.”

His expression changed.

“Grace.”

“Hospital records. Call logs. Screenshots. Location history. Your mother's messages. Everything.”

“You can't use private messages against me.”

“I don't need to.”

I opened the door.

“My attorney does.”

Daniel stepped toward me.

“You hired an attorney?”

I smiled for the first time.

“Yes.”

Then I walked outside.

Behind me, Daniel stood in the hallway staring at the empty nursery.

For the first time, he understood that the woman he had left behind wasn't waiting for him anymore.
