Chapter 13 - A Forever Home

Six months later, summer had returned to Chicago.
The adoption was officially finalized in a private, quiet courtroom downtown. The judge signed the final decree, declaring Matteo legally and permanently the son of Dominic Moretti and Sophie Lane.
To celebrate, the family didn't host a lavish syndicate party. Instead, they gathered at a small, private chapel overlooking Lake Michigan—the same chapel where Sophie had once said her final tearful goodbyes to her son Leo years ago.
The afternoon sun beamed warmly through the stained-glass windows. Sophie stood at the altar wearing a stunning lace gown, holding a bouquet of white roses. Beside her stood Dominic in a sharp navy suit, looking at her with an intensity that made her heart leap.
Matteo, now a happy, healthy toddler walking on steady legs, toddled down the aisle carrying a small satin ring pillow, cheered on by Nico and a small circle of close, loyal friends.
"Four years ago," Sophie whispered as Dominic took her hands at the altar, "I thought my life ended in a hospital room. I thought my heart was completely broken."
Dominic gently lifted her chin, kissing her fingers before sliding a simple platinum band onto her ring finger. "You saved my son, Sophie. And then you saved me. You gave this house a soul."

The priest pronounced them husband and wife, and as Dominic pulled Sophie into a deep, loving kiss, little Matteo ran up and wrapped his arms around both of their legs, giggling happily.
Under the bright blue Chicago sky, the dark shadows of the past were completely banished, replaced by the warmth of a second chance, an unbreakable bond, and a family that had fought through the dark to find their forever home.
