The Commission ruled unanimously in favor of Dominic and Sophie, granting them undisputed guardianship of Matteo under syndicate law. However, cornered animals are always the most dangerous.
Desperate to avoid losing his family's vast Swiss accounts, Don Carmine ordered a rogue hit squad to strike before the legal adoption papers were finalized.
Two days later, while Dominic was en route to the city's central records office, three unmarked sedans ambushed his motorcade on the lakefront drive. Automatic gunfire tore through the quiet afternoon, shattering the armor plating of the lead SUV.
"Boss! It's Carmine's men!" Nico yelled, ducking as bullets riddled the windshield.
Dominic didn't panic. His training as a military veteran before taking over the syndicate kicked in instantly. "Flank them through the lower drive! Do not let them cut off the route to the estate!"
A high-speed chase ensued along the rain-slick pavement of Lake Shore Drive. Dominic took the wheel himself, ramming the lead attacker's sedan into a concrete divider, sending it spinning out of control.
Realizing Carmine’s primary objective might not be him, Dominic pulled out his satellite phone, his pulse hammering. "Sophie! Lock down the perimeter right now! Carmine has gone rogue!"

On the other end, Sophie’s voice was remarkably steady. "We heard the alerts on the scanner, Dominic. Nico’s backup team already secured the interior. Matteo is in the panic room with me."
"I'm coming home," Dominic promised, stepping hard on the accelerator.
