Chapter 8 - The Price of Protection

The tension in the service foyer was so thick it could be sliced with a knife. Thomas stared down the barrel of Graham’s gun, the color rapidly draining from his bruised, arrogant face.
"You're... you're Graham Mercer," Thomas stuttered, his grip on Ellie slackening just a fraction. "This isn't your business! She's my wife—my kid! I have legal rights—"
"You forfeited any rights the moment you laid a hand on a child inside my home," Graham cut him off, his voice lethal and steady. "Marcus! Bring them in."
At Graham's command, heavy footsteps echoed from the courtyard entrance. Three massive, heavily armed private security enforcers poured into the hallway, blocking every possible exit. The second thug holding the crowbar dropped his weapon instantly, throwing his hands up in the air as two security guards tackled him to the floor.
Thomas panicked, yanking Ellie forward and raising a switchblade knife toward the little girl's throat. "Back off, Mercer! One step closer and I swear I'll—"
Crack!
Graham didn't hesitate. He didn't negotiate. With sniper-like precision, he fired a single warning shot that blew the blade completely out of Thomas's hand, sending metal shards clattering across the tile floor.
Before Thomas could blink, Graham closed the distance across the room with terrifying speed, grabbed the man by his collar, and slammed him against the reinforced concrete wall with enough force to rattle the windows.
"Get him out of my sight," Graham ordered, his chest heaving as he handed the weeping, terrified Thomas over to the security guards. "Toss him in the lower holding cells, call the federal marshals with his outstanding warrants from Atlanta, and make sure he spends the next twenty years in a maximum-security prison."
"Yes, boss!" the guards barked, dragging the screaming, flailing Thomas out toward the service elevators.
The moment the hallway cleared, Graham holstered his weapon and turned around.
Hannah had collapsed to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably as she pulled Ellie into her arms, kissing the little girl's face, hands, and hair over and over again. "Ellie... my baby, are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
"I'm okay, Mommy," Ellie cried, burying her face in Hannah's neck. "Mr. Graham saved us."
Graham knelt down beside them. His hands were slightly trembling—not from adrenaline, but from the terrifying realization of how close he had come to losing them. He gently placed a hand on Hannah’s shaking shoulder.
Hannah looked up at him, tears streaming down her pale cheeks, her eyes filled with an overwhelming tide of gratitude, relief, and undeniable love.

"You saved us," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Graham... you saved my daughter."
"I told you," Graham said softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "You are safe here. Both of you. Always."
