Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

An hour later, the tension in the massive, industrial-grade kitchen was thick enough to cut with a chef's knife.

Graham sat at the heavy oak breakfast island, a steaming mug of black coffee in front of him. The watercolor paint had been gently washed away from his face, leaving his skin clean, but the emotional imprint of Ellie's words remained etched in his mind.

Hannah stood a few feet away, nervously wringing her hands in her apron pockets. Ellie was fast asleep on a cushioned bench in the corner, exhausted from her artistic endeavors, clutching her damp cloth rabbit.

"You're hiding from someone," Graham stated without preamble, his eyes fixed on Hannah's face.

Hannah stiffened, her shoulders rising defensively. "Mr. Mercer, I signed a confidentiality agreement with the employment agency. My private life has nothing to do with my duties here at Grayhaven."

"Everything inside this house has to do with me, Hannah," Graham replied quietly, swirling his coffee. "I didn't reach the top of Nashville's development market by ignoring details. Your background check showed a clean record—hard-working, immaculate references from three hotels, single mother, moved to Tennessee six months ago. But it didn't explain why you flinched every time the front gate intercom buzzed this morning."

Hannah bit her lower lip, a bitter flavor rising in her throat. She looked over at sleeping Ellie, her heart squeezing with protective dread. "My ex-husband... he isn't a patient man. He found out we left our apartment in Atlanta. He believes he has a claim on Ellie, even though he hasn't provided a dime for her in two years. I came to Grayhaven because the security gate and private grounds were the only places I could afford that offered real protection."

Graham's jaw tightened. The mention of a ruthless, predatory figure hunting a mother and child struck a raw, deeply buried nerve. It reminded him of the corporate sharks who had tried to strip his mother's estate after her death—and worse, the fiancée who had betrayed him for financial gain years before.

"No one enters these gates without my explicit authorization, Hannah," Graham said, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, unyielding authority. "If your ex-husband comes anywhere near this estate, my security detail will handle it. You and your daughter are safe here."

Hannah looked at him, searching for the arrogant billionaire the tabloids wrote about, but finding only a fierce, protective resolve that matched her own. "Why are you helping us, Mr. Mercer? You don't even know us."

Graham looked back toward the dark hallway leading to the guest wing, remembering the tiny fingers pressing against his wrist, searching for a pulse to make sure he was alive.

"Because," Graham answered softly, "for a very long time, I forgot how to check if I was still alive myself."
