Chapter 6 - The Nashville Gala

The Parthenon in Centennial Park stood illuminated against the crisp November night sky, its massive white columns glowing under professional architectural lighting. Valet attendants scrambled to park exotic sports cars and luxury sedans as flashbulbs popped continuously along the red carpet.
When Graham Mercer’s black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up to the grand entrance, the paparazzi surged forward, cameras flashing like a thunderstorm.
The chauffeur opened the rear door. Graham stepped out first, adjusting his cuffs with practiced ease, before turning and offering his hand.
When Hannah stepped out of the vehicle, placing her slender hand in his, a collective gasp rippled through the press corps. Flashbulbs exploded in a blinding wall of white light. Microphones thrust forward.
"Mr. Mercer! Who is your companion?" "Is this a new engagement, Graham?" "Mr. Mercer, look this way!"
Graham didn't break stride. He kept his hand firmly wrapped around Hannah’s waist, pulling her close against his side, shielding her from the aggressive swarm while guiding her gracefully up the grand steps.
"Just breathe," Graham murmured softly into her ear as they passed through the towering bronze doors into the opulent, chandelier-lit rotunda. "You're doing wonderfully."
"My heart is beating out of my chest," Hannah whispered back, her fingers gripping his lapel. "Everyone is staring at us."
"Let them stare," Graham replied, a dark, protective edge to his voice. "They're staring because they've never seen me look at anyone the way I'm looking at you right now."
Inside the grand hall, the elite of Nashville's business and political spheres mingled, sipping champagne and exchanging polite, insincere pleasantries. As Graham and Hannah entered, the room seemed to pause. Whispers rippled through the crowd of silk gowns and tailored tuxedos.
"Isn't that the girl from the Mercer estate?" a sharp voice chimed in from the side.
Graham's jaw tightened. He turned his head to see Robert Vance standing near the champagne fountain, flanked by two corporate associates. Robert wore a predatory smirk, his eyes scanning Hannah up and down with blatant condescension.
"Well, well, Graham," Robert sneered, stepping into their path with a glass of champagne in hand. "I see you've found a new way to cut costs. Now you're bringing your domestic staff to charity galas? Have the Nashville socialites finally tired of your cold demeanor?"
The surrounding guests fell silent, turning to watch the confrontation between two of the city's most powerful men.
Hannah shrank back slightly, feeling the humiliation burn across her cheeks, but Graham didn't blink. He stepped forward, his massive frame physically blocking Robert from getting any closer to Hannah, radiating an aura of lethal, controlled danger.
"Robert," Graham said, his voice deceptively soft, carrying across the silent hall like a razor blade. "I'd watch your tone. You're talking about the woman who currently holds more influence over my life than your entire holding company could ever hope to buy."
Robert’s smirk faltered, his eyes narrowing in sudden, nervous realization.

"Enjoy your champagne, Robert," Graham added coldly. "Because by Monday morning, your shell companies in the warehouse district won't be worth the paper they're printed on. Shall we dance, Hannah?"
Without waiting for Robert's reply, Graham swept Hannah onto the center of the marble dance floor, pulling her into his arms as the live orchestra struck up a smooth, romantic waltz.
