Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Library

Back at Grayhaven House, the afternoon sun spilled through the high arched windows of the grand library, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air.
Hannah stood on a rolling wooden ladder, carefully wiping down the top shelf of leather-bound historical texts. Below her, Ellie sat quietly on a velvet ottoman, practicing letters in a blue notebook with a pack of colored markers.
The heavy oak door creaked open.
Hannah looked down, expecting one of the estate guards or the head chef. Instead, Graham walked in, his suit jacket slung over one shoulder, his tie loosened at the collar. He looked tired, the stress of the impending corporate battle with Robert Vance etched lightly around his eyes.
Ellie looked up immediately, her face lighting up with a gap-toothed smile. "Mr. Graham! You don't have paint on your face today!"
Graham chuckled, stepping closer to the ottoman. He crouched down so he was eye-level with the little girl. "Good afternoon, Ellie. Are you working on a masterpiece?"
"I'm writing my name," Ellie announced proudly, holding up the notebook.
Graham inspected the page, his expression softening. "That is an exceptional 'E'. Very strong lines."
Hannah descended the ladder carefully, her heart fluttering at the sight of the ruthless billionaire interacting so gently with her daughter. "Mr. Mercer, you're back early. Is everything alright?"
"Call me Graham, Hannah. How many times do I have to say it?" he said, standing up and turning to face her. He reached out and caught the edge of the dust rag she was holding, helping steady the ladder as she stepped down the last few rungs.
Their hands brushed briefly. An electric jolt of awareness snapped between them, so sudden and intense that Hannah instinctively pulled her hand back, her cheeks flushing crimson.
Graham noticed, his dark eyes darkening with a quiet intensity. "There’s a gala this Friday at the Parthenon," he said smoothly, changing the subject to cover the sudden tension. "A charity auction for the Nashville Children's Hospital. As the primary sponsor, I'm expected to make an appearance. I want you to attend with me, Hannah."
Hannah stared at him in disbelief, her breath catching in her throat. "Attend? As what? Mr. Mercer, I’m your housekeeper."
"As my guest," Graham corrected firmly. "My reputation in this city is built on image, Hannah. The press loves a bachelor billionaire narrative. If I show up with a mysterious, beautiful woman on my arm, it will completely distract the financial journalists from my ongoing negotiations with Robert Vance."
"You're using me as a smoke screen," Hannah said, her defensive pride flaring up.

"I'm offering you a night out of this fortress, a chance to dress up, and an ironclad guarantee that anyone who looks at you sideways will answer to my legal team," Graham replied, stepping closer, his voice low and hypnotic. "Besides... I think you deserve an evening where someone else is taking care of you for a change."
Hannah looked into his deep, unwavering eyes, feeling the walls she had spent years building around her heart begin to crumble piece by piece.
