Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

The gala was a resounding success, and as the weeks turned into months, Julian and I became inseparable. Our relationship grew naturally, built on a foundation of mutual respect, shared intellectual passions, and an effortless emotional connection that I had never experienced before. He didn't want a trophy; he wanted a partner.

However, the universe has a way of testing new happiness.

One afternoon, while working in my new executive office at Vanguard Headquarters, my assistant notified me that a woman was demanding to see me in the lobby. She refused to leave and claimed it was a matter of life and death.

Curious and cautious, I told security to allow her up, but to remain right outside my door.

When the door opened, a frail, poorly dressed young woman stepped inside. It took me a moment to recognize her. It was Sarah, Harrison’s younger sister, who had gone minimal-contact with the family years ago to live a quiet life out of state.

"Claire," Sarah said, her eyes welling with tears. "Thank you for seeing me. I know my family caused you unforgivable pain."

"You don't need to apologize for them, Sarah," I said gently, gesturing for her to sit down. "You were never part of their schemes. Why are you here?"

Sarah wrung her hands nervously. "It’s my mother. She’s... she’s very sick, Claire. The stress of the trial, losing everything... her heart is failing. She’s in a public hospital, and the state-issued care isn't enough. The doctors say she only has a few months left."

I sat back, my expression turning guarded. "Sarah, if this is another ploy—"

"It isn't! I swear it isn't!" Sarah sobbed, pulling out a medical report and placing it on my desk. "I'm paying for whatever I can, but I’m just a school teacher. I can’t afford the specialized treatment she needs to live out her remaining days without excruciating pain. I know she treated you like garbage. I know she doesn't deserve a dime from you. But I’m begging you... please, as a human being, help me give her a dignified end."

I looked down at the medical papers. The diagnosis was real. Patricia Voss was dying.
