Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The following morning, the atmosphere inside the executive boardroom of Voss Enterprises was thick with tension. Harrison sat at the head of the long glass table, rubbing his temples. His mother sat next to him, her eyes red from crying, still furious that her elite social club had suspended her membership due to the bounced check at the auction.

"We just need a temporary bridge loan," Harrison told his CFO, a nervous man named Richard. "Just pull it from the reserve account. Once the divorce settlement goes through and I force Claire to pay for the damages she caused to our reputation, we’ll replace it."

"Harrison, there is no money in the reserve account," Richard said, his voice trembling. "And it’s worse than that. The landlord of this building just served us with an immediate eviction and foreclosure notice."

Harrison jumped out of his chair. "What? We’ve leased this building for a decade! The old landlord was a friend of my father's. Who bought the debt?"

Before Richard could answer, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

I stepped inside, dressed in a tailored emerald-green power suit, my hair swept back smoothly. Behind me walked Arthur Pendelton and a team of four security guards.

Patricia gasped, leaping to her feet. "How dare you show your face here, you penniless thief! Security, remove this woman!"

"The security guards belong to me, Patricia," I said calmly, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table. "And as of eight o’clock this morning, so does this entire building."

Harrison stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. "Claire? What is the meaning of this joke? You can't afford a lawyer like Pendelton, let alone a commercial building. Whose money are you using? Who is backing you?"

"I am backing myself, Harrison," I replied, gesturing for Arthur to distribute a stack of documents to the board members. "For the last three years, you’ve treated me like an incompetent shadow in your house. While you were busy playing the big-shot CEO with my money, I was building Vanguard Holdings. I bought the distressed debt of this property six months ago. You are currently three months behind on your triple-net lease payments, which constitutes a material breach of contract."

Harrison grabbed the document in front of him, his eyes scanning the corporate seal of Vanguard Holdings. His face drained of all color as he saw my signature listed as the sole proprietor and CEO.

"Vanguard?" Harrison whispered, his voice cracking. "The firm that just bought out our largest competitor? That was you?"

"Every single dollar," I said, leaning forward, resting my chin on my hands. "Every time you told me I was nothing without your family name, I bought another block of shares. Every time your mother forced me to pay for her luxury vacations, I shorted your company’s stock because I knew how incompetent you truly were."

"You... you deceitful viper!" Patricia screamed, lunging across the table. "You stole from us! Harrison, call the police! She cheated us during the marriage!"

"Actually, Patricia," Arthur Pendelton interrupted, raising a hand. "All of Vanguard’s capital came from Ms. Claire’s independent inheritance and her own personal investments prior to and separate from the marriage. Under the prenuptial agreement that you forced her to sign to protect your family 'legacy,' Harrison has absolutely no claim to her corporate assets."

Harrison collapsed back into his chair, looking at me as if he were seeing a ghost. "Claire... please. We can talk about this. We were married for five years. You loved me."

"I loved the man I thought you were, Harrison," I said coldly. "But that man never existed. Now, you have twenty-four hours to vacate this building. And don't bother looking into the employee pension fund to pay your debts. I've already notified the federal regulators."
