Chapter 4 - The Public Unraveling

By that evening, the story had gone completely viral. A disgruntled employee inside the boardroom had recorded a snippet of my confrontation with Harrison and leaked it to a local news blog. From there, it exploded across Facebook and TikTok.
The headlines were ruthless: “Billionaire Ex-Wife Unmasks Fraudulent CEO.” “The Ultimate Revenge: Wife Cancels Mother-in-Law’s Card, Buys Ex-Husband’s Company.”
Public sympathy completely flipped. The very people who had looked down on me as a quiet, submissive trophy wife were now praising me as a corporate mastermind. Meanwhile, the Voss family name was dragged through the mud.
I sat in my penthouse, enjoying a quiet dinner, when a frantic knock echoed from my front door. This time, it wasn't a drill. It was a chaotic, desperate banging.
I checked the security feed. It was Harrison, but he looked unrecognizable. His tie was loosened, his jacket was gone, and his eyes were wild with panic. He was completely drunk.
"Claire! Open the door!" he screamed, pounding his fists against the wood. "You ruined me! The board just voted to remove me as CEO! The bank froze my personal accounts! They're investigating the pension fund! Please, Claire, you have to stop this!"
I walked over to the door but didn't open it. I spoke through the intercom. "Go home, Harrison. You did this to yourself. If you don't leave, I will have security remove you again."
"I have no home!" he yelled, sobbing openly now. "The bank is repossessing the mansion! My mother is hysterical, she’s locked herself in a hotel room she can't pay for! Claire, I’m sorry! I’m sorry I didn't appreciate you! I’ll do anything. We can get remarried, we can start over! Just save my company!"
"Get remarried?" I let out a bitter laugh. "You never loved me, Harrison. You loved having a housekeeper you didn't have to pay, and a financial cushion you could exploit without giving any credit. You thought I was weak because I chose peace over conflict. You confused my silence for ignorance."
"Please, Claire..." He slid down the door, sitting on the hallway floor, burying his face in his hands. "Don't destroy my life."

"I'm not destroying your life, Harrison. I'm just letting you experience the consequences of your own actions. Goodbye."
I turned off the intercom and walked away. Ten minutes later, the security team escorted him out of the building for the final time. The first phase of my freedom was complete, but I knew that a wounded beast like Patricia Voss wouldn't disappear without a fight.
