Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut

I drove down to 4th Street myself, but I didn't get out of my car. I parked half a block away, watching through a pair of tinted windows.

Within ten minutes, three police cruisers silently blocked both exits of the alleyway behind the Blue Diner. I watched through my side mirror as officers approached the dark SUV with their weapons drawn.

Harrison tried to put the vehicle in reverse, slamming into a dumpster, but he was completely trapped. Within moments, he was pulled out of the driver’s seat, thrown onto the pavement, and handcuffed. His face was a mask of sheer terror as his rights were read aloud in the cold morning air.

Inside the diner, Patricia must have heard the commotion. She rushed out of the side door, her face pale, screaming as she saw her son being pushed into the back of a police car.

"Harrison! No! Leave him alone!" she shrieked, running toward the officers.

An officer stopped her, checking her identification. Due to her involvement in hiding Harrison and her signature on several fraudulent corporate documents Arthur had uncovered, she was promptly informed that she was being detained as an accessory to financial fraud.

As the police cars began to drive away, I rolled down my window slightly. Patricia looked around wildly, her eyes landing on my car. She recognized me through the glass.

The look of utter defeat on her face was absolute. The luxury coats, the diamonds, the arrogance—all of it was gone. She was just a bitter, bankrupt woman who had destroyed her own life through greed, now facing a cold jail cell.

I rolled my window back up, shifted into drive, and left them behind in the rearview mirror. The toxic shadow of the Voss family was finally erased from my life.
