Chapter 6 - Whispers in the BoardroomWith Julian Vance behind bars and Marco stripped of all power, the corporate world assumed Moretti Enterprises would enter a period of quiet consolidation. They were wrong. Power vacuums in high finance rarely stay empty for long, and the dramatic fall of Vance International had left billions of dollars in distressed assets up for grabs.

Inside the glass-walled boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor of Moretti Tower, Vincent sat at the head of a long mahogany table. Around him sat twelve of the most influential corporate executives in North America.
"The merger with the remaining Vance logistics network is eighty percent complete," Paul, the CFO, announced, clicking through a digital presentation. "However, several institutional investors are expressing concern over our aggressive expansion. They are asking if Mr. Moretti's health recovery is genuinely permanent, or if this rapid restructuring is a temporary surge before a quiet retirement."
Vincent leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. The sharp, piercing intensity in his dark eyes instantly silenced the murmur of side conversations in the room.
"Let me address those concerns directly," Vincent said, his deep voice effortlessly commanding the space. "Six months ago, people in this very room thought I was a dying man clinging to a fading legacy. Certain individuals believed they could split my empire like wolves over a carcass. Those individuals are now wearing orange jumpsuits in federal penitentiaries."
He paused, letting his gaze sweep over every executive present.
"My health is absolute. My control over this company is absolute. And anyone who mistakes my recent period of reorganization for weakness will find out very quickly how I earned the title of Chairman. Are there any further questions regarding my capacity to lead?"
Not a single board member dared to speak. Several nodded vigorously in agreement, hurriedly closing their notebooks.
"Good," Vincent said smoothly. "Meeting adjourned."
As the executives filed out of the room, Paul lingered behind, adjusting his glasses nervously.
"Vincent," Paul said softly once the heavy double doors closed. "You handled them well, but there is an external complication we didn't anticipate."
Vincent adjusted his cufflinks. "Define 'complication'."
"The European regulatory commission," Paul revealed, sliding a sealed envelope across the glass table. "A French investment group, Sterling-Valois Consortium, has lodged a formal blockade against our acquisition of Vance’s European shipping ports. They claim our takeover violates anti-monopoly statutes."
Vincent opened the envelope, scanning the sleek parchment letter stamped with the crest of the Sterling-Valois group.
"Who heads Sterling-Valois?" Vincent asked.
"Lady Helena Valois," Paul answered. "She’s the widow of the late Duke of Valois. She controls one of the largest private banking dynasties in Western Europe. She’s notorious for buying up distressed assets right before major conglomerates can secure them. She’s sharp, ruthlessly connected, and entirely untainted by the Vance scandal."
Vincent’s lips curled into a subtle, intrigued smile. He had spent months dealing with treacherous snakes like Isabella and weak cowards like Marco. A legitimate, high-stakes confrontation with an intellectual equal in the global financial arena was precisely the challenge he needed to fully seal his return to power.
"Set up a private summit in Paris for next Tuesday," Vincent ordered.
Paul looked surprised. "You're going to France personally? Vincent, your medical team advised against long-distance international travel for another two months."
"My medical team cleared me for full activity three weeks ago, Paul," Vincent replied, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Besides, Lady Valois wants to see if the rumors of my recovery are true. It would be rude to keep her waiting."
Before leaving his office that evening, Vincent stopped by the newly renovated family wing of the Moretti headquarters. Clara now headed the corporate philanthropy division, managing millions of dollars dedicated to supporting low-income families and children’s medical research.
Through the glass window of her office, Vincent saw Clara reviewing grant applications while Lily sat at a small child-sized desk nearby, diligently drawing pictures with bright colored markers.
Vincent knocked softly on the open door frame.
Lily looked up instantly, her face lighting up. "Mr. Vincent!"
She scrambled out of her chair, running over and wrapping her small arms around his knee. Vincent smiled, crouching down to her eye level with effortless grace.
"What are you drawing today, little one?" Vincent asked.
Lily held up a sheet of paper. It was a colorful drawing of a giant building, a golden dog, and three people holding hands—a tall man in a suit, a woman, and a little girl holding a rag doll.
"It's us!" Lily announced proudly. "In our big house!"
Vincent looked at the simple, beautiful drawing, feeling a warmth in his chest that no corporate conquest or financial victory could ever replicate. For thirty-five years, he had believed that power was built on control and fear. But looking at Clara and Lily, he knew that true strength was built on the people you chose to protect.
"It's beautiful, Lily," Vincent said softly, taking the drawing gently. "I'm going to put this in a gold frame right behind my desk."
Clara smiled warmly from her desk. "She’s been working on that all afternoon. Are you heading out, Vincent?"
"I have a flight to Paris on Monday," Vincent said, standing up. "A business matter in Europe. I’ll be gone for three days."
Clara’s smile faltered slightly, a hint of genuine concern touching her eyes. "Is everything alright? No more... unexpected surprises?"
"No surprises," Vincent reassured her gently, stepping closer and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Just business. The house is secure, Viktor’s team is on full alert, and you have my direct line. Nothing moves in this city without my knowledge."

Clara nodded, placing her hand over his for a brief, tender moment. "Safe travels, Vincent. We'll be waiting for you."
As Vincent walked out of the skyscraper into the cool autumn evening air, he took a deep breath. The storm of betrayal was behind him, but the expansion of his new life was just beginning.
