Chapter 3 - The Shadow War BeginsThe subterranean wine cellar beneath the Moretti mansion was a cold, stone fortress built into the bedrock of the estate. Locked behind a six-inch steel door, Marco Moretti paced frantically back and forth across the damp brick floor, while Isabella sat silently on a wooden crate, her expensive cream dress stained with dust, her eyes burning with fury.

"We're dead," Marco muttered, running his hands through his ruined hair. "You don't understand what Vincent does to people who betray him! He took down the Genovese syndicate when he was twenty-five! He’ll bury us under this house!"

"Control yourself, you pathetic worm," Isabella spat, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Vincent is weak. He’s been taking small doses of that poison for ninety days. His heart is compromised, his body is exhausted. He can barely walk without shaking. He won't survive the stress of fighting Julian."

"You don't get it, do you?" Marco turned on her, his eyes wild with fear. "Vincent doesn't need to fight with his hands! He fights with his mind! And now he knows!"

Above them, in the grand study on the second floor, the atmosphere was completely different.

Vincent was sitting in a high-backed leather chair. He had discarded his hospital clothes and was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit. Though his face was still pale and his breathing was shallow, his posture was immaculate.

Standing before him were his top lieutenants: Viktor, his head of security; Paul, his chief financial officer; and Clara Bennett, the maid, who sat nervously on the edge of a chair while her daughter Lily played quietly with her rag doll on the carpet nearby.

"Dr. Vale has confessed everything on tape," Viktor reported in his heavy Eastern European accent. "We have the original poison vials, the altered prescription records, and the bank transfers linking Isabella to Vance’s dummy corporation in Panama."

"Good," Vincent said, sipping a cup of strong black coffee. He felt a sharp pang in his chest—a lingering side effect of the poison—but he ignored it. "What is the status of the board meeting scheduled for Friday?"

Paul, the CFO, adjusted his glasses. "Marco had already briefed four key board members. They were prepared to vote for your temporary removal on grounds of medical incompetence. If that vote had passed, Marco would have had executive signing authority. He was planning to sell our logistics arm to a shell company owned by Vance at a ninety percent discount."

Vincent’s jaw tightened. "Cancel the meeting. Tell the board I will be holding a mandatory press conference at 10:00 AM on Thursday at the Moretti Tower headquarters instead."

Paul blinked in surprise. "A press conference? Vincent, if the market realizes you’ve been poisoned, our stock will collapse."

"The market won't know I was poisoned," Vincent said coldly. "The market will know that Moretti Enterprises is launching a hostile takeover of Vance Logistics."

Paul’s jaw dropped. "What? Vincent, Julian Vance has over three billion dollars in liquid capital backed by offshore syndicates! We can't fight him in an open market war while you’re in this condition!"

"We aren't fighting him in an open market war," Vincent replied, leaning forward. "We are going to use his own weapon against him. He used Isabella to enter my house. I am going to use Isabella to burn his to the ground."

Vincent turned his eyes to Clara and young Lily.

Clara flinched slightly, suddenly feeling out of place among these powerful, dangerous men. "Mr. Moretti... should I leave?"

"No, Clara," Vincent said gently, his tone softening dramatically. "You and Lily are under my personal protection now. You saved my life tonight. From this moment on, you are no longer a maid in this house."

Clara stared at him, bewildered. "Sir?"

"I am setting up a trust fund for Lily," Vincent said firmly. "Her education, her future—everything is paid for. And for you, Clara, I am appointing you as the manager of my personal estate operations. You answer only to me."

Tears sprang to Clara’s eyes. "Mr. Moretti... I... I don't know what to say..."

Vincent looked down at four-year-old Lily, who was looking back up at him with innocent, dark eyes.

"You don't have to say anything," Vincent said, pulling a small silver pocket watch from his vest—a heirloom given to him by his father—and crouching down slowly, despite the pain in his chest, to hand it to the little girl. "You saw the truth when everyone else was blind, Lily. This is for you."

Lily took the shining watch, her small face lighting up with a radiant smile. "Thank you, Mr. Vincent."

Vincent stood up, his face hardening as he turned back to Viktor.

"Bring Isabella upstairs," Vincent commanded. "It's time she sends a message to her master."

Ten minutes later, Isabella was dragged into the study by two security guards. Her hair was disheveled, and the arrogance in her eyes had been replaced by a flickering flame of desperation.

"Vincent," she sneered. "Have you come to beg for a deal?"

Vincent didn't answer. He simply gestured to a cellphone resting on the mahogany desk.

"Call Julian," Vincent ordered.

Isabella narrowed her eyes. "Why would I do that?"

"Because," Vincent said, stepping close enough that she could smell the cold coffee and rain on him, "you are going to tell him that the poison worked. You are going to tell him that I am in a coma, that Marco has taken control, and that the board is ready to sign the liquidation documents at my private estate in the Hamptons tomorrow night."

Isabella laughed bitterly. "You think Julian is an idiot? He won't fall for that! He will verify it through his own intelligence sources!"

"He already has," Vincent said softly.

He slid an iPad across the desk toward her. On the screen was a fake medical bulletin, leaked thirty minutes ago through a compromised news outlet that Vincent secretly owned, declaring that Vincent Moretti had suffered a massive stroke and was on life support.

Isabella looked at the screen, her confidence wavering.

"Julian wants me dead, Isabella," Vincent said, his voice dripping with sinister intent. "He wants to see my body. He will come to the estate tomorrow night to personally oversee the signing with Marco and ensure I never wake up. And when he arrives..."

Vincent stepped closer, bending down to whisper in her ear.

"...he will find that the house he thought he conquered is a butcher shop. Make the call, Isabella. Or I hand you over to the Federal prosecutors tonight, with fifty years of wire fraud and attempted murder charges waiting for you."

Isabella stared at the phone. Her hands trembled. She knew Julian Vance. If Julian discovered she had failed, he wouldn't hire a lawyer—he would execute her. Her only chance of surviving was to play Vincent's game and hope Julian somehow came out on top.

With shaking fingers, she picked up the phone and dialed.

The call connected on the second ring.

"Is it done?" a deep, gravelly voice answered from the speaker.

Isabella swallowed hard, looking up at Vincent, who had his gun resting casually in his hand.

"It's done, Julian," Isabella lied, her voice surprisingly steady. "Vincent is on life support. He won't survive the night. Marco has the documents. We need you at the Hamptons estate tomorrow at midnight to finalize the transfer."

A long silence followed on the other end of the line. The tension in the study was palpable.

Then, Julian Vance laughed—a low, terrifying sound.

"Well done, my sweet girl," Julian said. "I will be there at midnight. Make sure the body is cold."

The line went dead.

Isabella lowered the phone, looking at Vincent. "He believed it."

"No," Vincent said, a dark smile spreading across his face. "He didn't. Julian never moves without an army. He knows it’s a trap."

Isabella froze. "If you know he knows, why did you have me invite him?!"

Vincent leaned back against his desk, crossing his arms.

"Because, my dear... a trap is only dangerous if the rat knows where the spring is hidden. He thinks he’s coming to ambush me. He doesn't know I’ve already bought his army."
