Chapter 4 - The Counter-TrapThe torrential rain had swept from the city out to the coastal cliffs of Montauk, where the private beachfront estate of the Moretti family stood against the crashing waves of the Atlantic. The massive mansion sat shrouded in darkness, its towering gothic windows reflecting the flash of distant lightning.

Inside the darkened master bedroom, a dummy figure lay under the white sheets, hooked up to heart monitors that beeped in a steady, artificial rhythm.
Outside, scattered through the thick fog surrounding the estate, eight heavily armed men in black tactical gear crept silently through the manicured gardens. Leading them was Julian Vance himself—a towering man in his late fifties with graying hair, a scarred jawline, and eyes like a predator.
Julian held a suppressed submachine gun. He tapped his comms earpiece. "Team Alpha, status."
"Perimeter clear, boss," a voice crackled back. "Estate security is minimal. Looks like they’re completely unprepared. The maid and the brother are inside."
Julian smirked in the dark. He had known Isabella’s call was suspect. His informants had told him Vincent was ill, but Julian was too paranoid to trust a woman who acted out of desperation. He had brought his elite mercenary squad—former special forces operatives paid millions to ensure the Moretti empire collapsed tonight.
"Move in," Julian ordered quietly. "Kill everyone inside. Leave no witnesses. We burn the estate and make it look like an electrical fire."
The mercenaries breached the rear patio glass doors, sliding into the dark mansion like ghosts. They moved in tactical formation down the long, marble-lined hallway leading toward the master suite.
Julian led the way, stepping into the dimly lit master bedroom. He walked up to the bed, his submachine gun raised, pointing it directly at the head of the form beneath the blankets.
"Goodbye, Vincent," Julian sneered, pulling back the sheet.
He froze.
Beneath the sheet was not Vincent Moretti. It was a stuffed leather mannequin, attached to a portable medical monitor that was playing a recorded heart sound.
"Looking for me, Julian?"
Julian spun around, raising his weapon, but before he could pull the trigger, the dark wooden panels of the bedroom walls slid open with a sharp hydraulic hiss.
Floodlights suddenly blasted into the bedroom from four hidden alcoves, blinding Julian and his men.
"Drop your weapons!" a thunderous voice boomed through the estate's intercom system.
From behind bulletproof glass partitions that had descended from the ceiling, Viktor and twenty heavily armed Moretti security guards stepped forward, their red laser sights dotting the chests of Julian’s mercenaries.
Julian’s men instantly realized they were utterly outmatched. They were caught in a kill-zone with zero cover. One by one, the mercenaries lowered their weapons and dropped to their knees, raising their hands.
Julian stood frozen in the center of the blinding light, his teeth gritted in rage. "Moretti!"
The double doors of the master bedroom swung open slowly.
Vincent Moretti walked into the room. He wasn't in a wheelchair. He wasn't shaking. He was wearing an exquisite double-breasted navy suit, walking slowly but with complete stability, supported by a heavy steel-headed cane.
Beside him stood Chief Harrison of the New York State Police, along with six federal agents holding arrest warrants.
"Julian Vance," Chief Harrison announced, stepping forward with silver handcuffs drawn. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, enterprise corruption, domestic terrorism, and international extortion."
Julian’s face twisted in disbelief. He glared at Vincent. "You... you tricked the police into coming here?!"
"I didn't trick them, Julian," Vincent said, his voice smooth as silk. "I invited them. I gave them full access to your encrypted communications, courtesy of the server logs we retrieved from Isabella’s private apartment three hours ago. Every payment you made to her, every order you gave to your mercenaries—it’s all on a federal server right now."
Julian dropped his gun, his hands shaking with pure hatred. "You think this stops my empire? My board will post my bail by morning! My attorneys will shred this case!"
"Your board won't post your bail, Julian," Vincent said, taking a step closer and leaning on his cane. "Because while you were walking into my house, my financial team was executing a short-position squeeze on Vance International stock. We released Dr. Vale’s full confession to the Wall Street Journal twenty minutes ago, linking your company to corporate assassination plots. Your stock has dropped sixty percent in after-hours trading. Your board just voted to remove you as CEO five minutes ago."
Julian gasped, his face turning gray. Everything he had built over thirty years—his power, his fortune, his freedom—had been dismantled in a single evening.
Federal agents swarmed Julian, slamming him against the wall and clicking the handcuffs around his wrists.
As they dragged the screaming, cursing crime lord out of the bedroom, Vincent stood quietly, listening to the rain pounding against the reinforced glass.
Viktor stepped up beside him. "The mercenaries are secured, boss. What about the rest of the garbage?"
Vincent turned slowly. "Bring Marco and Isabella."
Two minutes later, Marco and Isabella were brought into the bright room, bound at the wrists. They looked at Julian Vance being led away in chains, then looked at Vincent.
Marco collapsed to his knees, sobbing hysterically. "Vincent! Please! Brother! I was forced into it! Julian threatened to kill me if I didn't help him! I’m your blood, Vincent! You can't let them take me to prison!"
Vincent looked down at his brother with an expression of profound sadness, mixed with absolute disgust.
"You were my brother, Marco," Vincent said softly. "I gave you everything. A high-ranking position, wealth, luxury, respect. But your envy destroyed you. You didn't want to build an empire, Marco. You just wanted to sit on my throne."
Vincent nodded to the federal agents. "Take him. He’s charged as a co-conspirator in attempted murder."
"No! Vincent! Please! VINCENT!" Marco screamed as he was dragged down the hallway, his cries echoing until the front doors slammed shut.
Then, Vincent turned to Isabella.
She didn't cry. She didn't beg. She stood straight, her dark eyes filled with bitter defeat.
"You played a grand game, Vincent," she whispered. "I suppose you're going to hand me over to the Feds now too?"
"No," Vincent said smoothly.
Isabella’s eyes widened slightly in surprise. "No?"
"The Feds would give you twenty years in a low-security federal facility," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a terrifying chill. "That is far too merciful for a woman who sat by my bed and stroked my hair while slipping poison into my glass."
Isabella’s breath hitched. "What are you going to do to me?"
"You wanted the Vance empire, Isabella," Vincent said, turning his back on her. "I have just acquired eighty percent of Vance International’s assets in the liquidation bankruptcy. That includes a small, remote shipping depot in northern Alaska. You are going to work there. As a line worker. Under 24-hour private security guard watch. For the rest of your life. You will never set foot in a city again. You will never wear silk again. You will remember every single day what you threw away for greed."
Isabella screamed in fury, lunging at Vincent, but Viktor grabbed her by the arm, dragging her backward out of the room as she kicked and shrieked until her voice vanished into the stormy night.
Vincent stood alone in the center of the massive room. The storm outside was finally beginning to clear, the heavy clouds parting to reveal the faint light of dawn over the ocean horizon.
He pulled out his handkerchief, wiped a line of cold sweat from his forehead, and felt his heart beating steady and strong in his chest.

The poison was gone. The snakes had been purged from his house.
He turned and walked downstairs.
