Chapter 2 - The Broken CircleThe silence in the grand master suite was so heavy that the rhythmic drumming of the midnight rain against the floor-to-ceiling glass sounded like a barrage of gunfire.

Vincent Moretti sat propped against his pillows. His body was frail, but the lethal composure that had built the Moretti empire had returned to his dark eyes. He didn't look at his brother Marco, nor at Dr. Adrien Vale, nor even at his breathtaking fiancée, Isabella Crane. Instead, his gaze remained fixed on four-year-old Lily Bennett, who was still clutching her worn rag doll, Molly, against her chest.
"Clara," Vincent said softly, his deep voice carrying through the room. "Take Lily downstairs. Lock the door to the servant quarters and stay there until I call for you."
Clara Bennett looked petrified. Her hands shook violently as she swept her small daughter into her arms. "Yes, Mr. Moretti. I’m so sorry—"
"Don't apologize, Clara," Vincent interrupted gently. "You and your daughter just saved my life."
As Clara hurried out, locking the heavy mahogany door behind her, the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. The polished facade of the people standing around the bed began to fracture.
"Vincent, this is madness," Marco scoffed, adjusting his immaculate Tom Ford suit jacket. He took a step toward the bed, attempting to exude smooth brotherly concern. "You’re running a high fever. You’re letting the rambling of a child make you paranoid. Adrien has been our family physician for a decade. Isabella has barely left your side for three weeks!"
Vincent didn't answer right away. He calmly picked up the medicine glass—the clear, odorless liquid inside catching the amber light of the chandelier—and tipped it slightly, watching how the liquid moved.
"A broken seal, Marco," Vincent whispered. His eyes locked onto his brother's. "A hidden blue label. A missing nurse’s log. And a doctor who can’t look me in the eye."
Dr. Adrien Vale swallowed hard. His fingers twitched near his medical bag. "Vincent... Mr. Moretti... the pharmaceutical distributor changed their cap colors last week. It’s a standard batch variation. I swear to you—"
"Nurse Parks," Vincent called out sharply, completely ignoring the doctor.
Nurse Evelyn Parks, who had stood trembling near the cart, took two timid steps forward. Her face was drained of color. "Y-yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"How long have you noticed the altered caps?"
"I... I didn't notice until tonight, sir," Evelyn stammered, her voice cracking. "Dr. Vale personally brings the specialized cardiac supplements from his private dispensary. He instructed me never to tamper with or prep the bottles myself. He said it was a high-potency regimen that required precise administration."
"Is that so?" Vincent turned to Dr. Vale. "Adrien, why would a cardiologist personally hand-deliver daily doses of standard blood thinners and beta-blockers? You’re the Chief of Medicine at St. Jude’s, yet you’re acting as a pharmacy courier?"
Dr. Vale’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Sweat was glistening on his forehead.
Isabella Crane took a breath, smoothed her cream silk dress, and stepped into the space between Vincent and the doctor. Her posture was flawless, her expression radiating deep, wounded sadness. She leaned over the bed, reaching out to gently touch Vincent’s hand, but he pulled his arm back, resting it coldly on his lap.
Isabella hurt visibly, a tear welling in her green eyes. "Vincent... my love. Look at me. Please. I know how terrible this illness has been. I know how helpless you feel being confined to this bed while the board presses Marco for leadership transitions. But do you really believe I could hurt you? I love you. We are getting married in two months!"
"We were getting married in two months," Vincent corrected softly. "Tell me, Isabella... if I had died tonight, what would have happened to my personal shares in Moretti Enterprises?"
"Vincent, don't do this—" Marco warned, taking another step forward.
"Answer me!" Vincent’s roar echoed off the hand-carved wood paneling, sending a shockwave through the room. For a second, the sick, dying man disappeared, replaced by the ruthless titan who had conquered the city's underbelly and corporate world alike.
Isabella flinched, stepping back.
"Your will," Marco interjected, his tone hardening as he realized the game was shifting. "Your will leaves 51% of voting shares to your spouse upon marriage, or to the family trust managed by me if you pass unmarried. But that’s standard estate planning, Vincent! You set that up three years ago!"
"And who introduced me to Dr. Vale three months ago when my 'fatigue' first started?" Vincent asked, his dark eyes moving from Marco to Isabella. "It was you, Isabella. You recommended him after my long-time physician mysteriously retired to South America."
"He's a world-renowned specialist!" she cried.
"And who pushed the board to hold an emergency vote this coming Friday to declare me temporarily incapacitated?" Vincent continued, glaring at Marco. "You, brother. You told the board I was losing my mind."
Marco’s handsome face twisted into a sneer, dropping the caring brother act entirely. "You are losing your mind! Look at you! You’re accusing your family, your doctor, and your bride of poisoning you because a four-year-old saw a piece of blue plastic!"
"Then let’s test it," Vincent said calmly.
The room went completely still.
Vincent picked up the medicine glass again. He didn't offer it to Marco or Isabella. Instead, he looked straight at Dr. Adrien Vale.
"Drink it, Adrien."
Dr. Vale backed up half a step, his heels catching on the Persian rug. "What?"
"If it’s just my cardiac medication—if it’s just standard blood thinners—it won't hurt a man with a healthy heart. Drink the glass, Adrien. Prove my paranoia wrong, and I will write you a check for five million dollars right now."
Dr. Vale’s knees seemed to buckle. He looked desperately toward Marco, then toward Isabella. Neither of them made a move to help him. They stood like statues, suddenly isolating the doctor.
"I... I cannot take medication prescribed for a patient..." Dr. Vale stuttered, his voice trembling violently. "It’s... it’s against medical ethics—"
"Drink it," Vincent commanded, his tone dropping an octave, cold as ice. "Or I call Chief Harrison of the Metro Police right now. I have his private line on speed dial. He will have this glass seized, taken to a state forensic lab, and analyzed by morning."
Dr. Vale broke.
He dropped his leather medical bag, slumped onto his knees, and put his hands over his face. "It wasn't my idea! God help me, it wasn't my idea!"
"Adrien, shut up!" Marco snapped, stepping forward as if to strike the doctor, but Vincent reached under his pillow and produced a sleek, black Sig Sauer 9mm pistol. He pointed it directly at Marco’s chest.
"Move another inch, Marco, and I’ll end thirty years of sibling rivalry right here," Vincent said without a trace of hesitation.
Marco froze, his hands slowly rising into the air, his eyes wide with shock. He had forgotten that beneath the tailored suits and corporate titles, Vincent was a man raised in the shadows of an empire built on survival.
"Speak, Adrien," Vincent ordered, keeping the gun leveled at his brother. "What is in the bottle?"
"Succinylcholine... mixed with low-dose digoxin," Dr. Vale sobbed, wiping tears from his face. "It... it simulates progressive heart failure and sudden cardiac arrest. It leaves almost no trace in a standard autopsy after twelve hours... It looks like a natural cardiac event brought on by chronic illness..."
Vincent’s chest burned with a mixture of betrayal and cold fury. For three months, he had been sitting in this bed, feeling his vitality drain away day by day, believing his body was betraying him. He had watched the woman he loved hold his hand while she fed him slow poison. He had watched his brother handle his business while calculating the days until his death.
"Who paid you?" Vincent asked softly.
Dr. Vale lifted his head, pointing a trembling finger at Isabella. "She did! She promised me two million dollars from the estate settlement once the marriage went through or once the trust dissolved! And Marco... Marco guaranteed my position as Head of Health Administration for the entire city network once he took over Moretti Enterprises!"
Isabella’s face went deadly pale, but her eyes darkened with pure malice. The sweet, elegant woman was gone. In her place stood a cold, calculating creature.
"You coward," Isabella hissed at the doctor. She then looked at Vincent, her chin rising in defiance. "You think you’ve won, Vincent? Look at you. You can barely stand. You hold a gun, but you don't have the strength to pull the trigger and deal with the fallout. The board already knows you're unstable. The media knows you're sick."
"Nurse Parks," Vincent said smoothly, not taking his eyes off Isabella. "Go to my office down the hall. In the top drawer of my desk, there is a red leather folder. Bring it to me."
Nurse Evelyn rushed out of the room without hesitation.
Minutes passed in agonizing silence. Rain continued to slam against the glass. Marco stood with his hands up, breathing heavily. Isabella glared at Vincent with pure disgust, while Dr. Vale remained weeping on the floor.
Nurse Evelyn returned, breathlessly handing the red folder to Vincent.
Vincent opened it with one hand. "You thought I was stupid, Isabella. You thought because I fell in love with you, I closed my eyes. But I didn't reach the top of this city by being blind."
He pulled out several glossy photographs and bank statements, tossing them onto the bed.
"Three weeks ago, my private security team flagged transfers from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands to an untraceable account in Zurich," Vincent revealed. "I thought it was an industrial espionage attempt from our rivals in Chicago. I was investigating the source. But today... today my lead investigator confirmed the identity of the account holder."
Vincent looked up, his eyes piercing Isabella. "It belongs to Julian Vance."
At the mention of that name, Isabella’s composure finally shattered completely. Her breath hitched.
Julian Vance was the head of the Vance Syndicate—the Moretti family’s oldest, most bloodthirsty rival corporate cartel.
"You aren't just a greedy woman trying to inherit a fortune, Isabella," Vincent said softly, the tragic reality setting in. "You were planted. Julian Vance sent you to me eighteen months ago. The chance meeting at the charity gala... the shared interests... the sudden romance... It was all a hit from the inside."
"Vincent..." Marco stammered, his confidence evaporating into terror. "Vincent, I swear... I didn't know about Vance! I thought... I thought Isabella and I were just taking what was ours before you ruined the family with your weakness! I didn't know she was working with the Vances!"
"Shut up, Marco!" Isabella turned on him, her voice filled with venom. "You useful idiot! You served your purpose. You helped me isolate him, you signed the internal transfer documents, and you opened the gates!"
She looked back at Vincent, a twisted smile appearing on her red lips. "So what now, Vincent? You catch us. You call the police. The scandal hits tomorrow morning. Moretti Enterprises stock plunges to zero. Julian Vance moves in and buys up the distressed assets by noon. You still lose. Your father's legacy dies tonight whether you drink that glass or not!"
Vincent stared at her for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a cold, ruthless smile spread across his lips—a smile that made Marco’s stomach turn.
"You underestimate me, Isabella," Vincent whispered. "You think this room is where my empire ends. But you forgot one thing."
Vincent tapped a small button on the side of his nightstand.
A heavy click echoed through the room as the main doors unlocked, and four towering men in dark suits, led by Vincent’s chief of security, Viktor—a hulking ex-Spetsnaz operative—stepped inside.
"Viktor," Vincent commanded softly. "Take Dr. Vale and Nurse Parks into the study. Keep them comfortable, but ensure their phones are destroyed. As for my brother... and my beautiful bride..."
May you like
Vincent’s smile vanished, replaced by an abyss of ice.
"Lock them in the wine cellar. Stripped of their phones, their jewelry, and their dignity. Tomorrow morning, the war with Julian Vance begins. And they are going to help me win it."
