Chapter 9 - The Final CollapseTime seemed to slow down to a crawl.

Victor looked at Arthur, then at Julian, then at Elena. He realized the trap had closed around him. There was no escape, no offshore accounts to flee to, no corporate board to manipulate.

A twisted, desperate smile crossed Victor’s face.

"Then we burn together," Victor hissed, his thumb pressing down hard on the red button of the detonator.

Click.

For one agonizing second, nothing happened.

Then, Arthur pulled the trigger of his gun. A single, deafening gunshot echoed through the penthouse.

Victor’s eyes went wide. The pistol slipped from his fingers, clattering against the marble floor. He staggered backward, clutching his shoulder where Arthur’s bullet had struck him clean through, before collapsing hard against the floorboards.

At the same time, the red light on the detonator flickered and died.

"It... it was a dummy remote," Julian whispered, exhaling a breath he felt like he’d been holding for a century. He immediately rushed forward, grabbing the heavy security override box on the wall and disarming the local alarm systems.

Arthur’s security detail swarmed into the room, subduing Victor and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists while paramedics rushed in with oxygen masks for Clara.

Clara lay on the floor, gasping for air, tears streaming down her bruised face. She looked up and saw Elena standing over her—not with hatred, not with triumph, but with a quiet, devastating pity.

"Elena..." Clara choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "I'm... I'm so sorry."

Elena didn't say anything for a long moment. She knelt down beside her mother, the woman who had abandoned her, betrayed her, and tried to destroy her wedding, yet was still the vessel through which life had been given to her.

"I know, Clara," Elena whispered, using her first name for the first time without venom, just closure. "It's over now."

Victor was dragged away by federal agents, cursing and screaming into the smoke-filled night as his multi-billion-dollar empire evaporated around him.

The fire suppression systems finally kicked in, heavy streams of water pouring down from the ceiling to extinguish the flames, washing away the ash, the soot, and the thirty-year stain of lies that had poisoned two families.
