Chapter 3 - The Twisted Branches of the Family Tree"No," Julian whispered, backing away from Elena as if she had suddenly transformed into a monster. "No, that's impossible. We... we grew up in different cities. We met at a charity gala. We..."

"We fell in love," Elena finished for him, her voice cracking for the first time. The mask of iron composure slipped, revealing the shattered, weeping woman beneath. She looked at Julian with an expression of pure agony. "Do you think I knew, Julian? Do you think I would have walked down that aisle if I had the slightest idea that the man holding my hand was the brother I never knew existed?"

"Of course you didn't know," Arthur said quietly, stepping in to manage the chaos. He walked over to Julian and placed a heavy hand on his shoulder. "None of you knew. That was Clara’s masterpiece of misery. She kept the secret so locked down that even the fates lost track of the pieces."

Clara was hyperventilating now, clutching her chest as her breathing turned shallow and rapid. "The heart... my heart..." she choked out, sliding sideways off the sofa and collapsing onto the carpet.

"Mother!" Julian shouted, forgetting the shock for a split second as maternal instinct kicked in. He dropped to his knees beside her, ripping off his silk tie and unbuttoning her collar. "Call an ambulance! Someone call an ambulance right now!"

"Let her lie flat," Elena commanded instantly, her voice cutting through the panic with the precision of a trained surgeon. She dropped to her knees on the other side of Clara, her hands moving with practiced efficiency to check the older woman's pulse. "She's having a panic-induced cardiac spasm. Arthur, get her emergency medication from her clutch. Now!"

Arthur moved quickly, retrieving a small gold pillbox from Clara’s designer bag and handing it to Elena.

Working side by side, the brother and the sister—bound by blood they had just discovered—revived the woman who had torn their lives apart. As Clara coughed, swallowing the nitro pill and gasping for air, she looked up and saw the two of them hovering over her.

Julian on the left. Elena on the right.

Two sides of the same coin. Two children she had broken in different ways.

"Why..." Clara rasped, her eyes swimming with tears as she looked at Julian. "Why did you have to fall in love with her out of all the women in the world? Of all the millions of women... why my daughter?"

"Because the sins of the mother always find the children, Clara," Arthur said coldly from the doorway, watching the scene with grim satisfaction. "You thought you could bury a child like trash and build an empire on top of her grave. But the earth always rejects what doesn't belong to it."

Julian stood up slowly, brushing the dust off his trousers. He looked down at his mother with eyes completely devoid of warmth. The respect, the obedience, the filial piety he had shown her his entire life evaporated in a single hour.

"The wedding is cancelled," Julian announced to the empty room, his voice flat and mechanical. "Security will escort guests out. The press statement will read that the ceremony was postponed due to a sudden family medical emergency."

"And what about us, Julian?" Elena asked, standing up to face him. Her eyes were red-rimmed, searching his face for the man she had planned to build a future with. "What about us?"

Julian looked at her—at the woman whose lips he had kissed, whose body he had held, whose soul he had sworn to protect—and felt a sickness rise in his throat.

"We need a DNA test," Julian said, his voice trembling. "To be one hundred percent certain. Until then... I don't know who you are to me, Elena. And I don't know who I am anymore either."

He turned and walked out of the room, leaving the mother and daughter alone in the wreckage of their shared history.
