Chapter 7 - The Final Chess MoveThe executive suite of Sterling Holdings looked like a command center during wartime. Monitors lined the walls, displaying stock tickers, legal injunctions, and real-time security feeds from across the city.

Elena sat at the main desk, reviewing the financial restructuring of Vance Global. The transition of power had been swift and merciless. With ninety-eight percent of the shares under her control, she had already purged the corrupt board members and initiated an independent audit into thirty years of corporate malfeasance.
The door opened quietly.
Julian walked in. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his eyes shadowed with grief and lack of sleep. He didn't look like the untouchable corporate heir he had been a week ago. He looked like a man who had lost his entire world.
"You shouldn't be here, Julian," Elena said without looking up from her tablet. Her voice was steady, professional, but completely devoid of warmth. "Corporate security was instructed to restrict access to former executives."
"I’m not here as an executive," Julian said softly, stopping a few feet from her desk. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, folded envelope. "I’m here as... well, I don't even know what I am to you anymore."
Elena finally looked up. Her eyes met his. The pain in her chest flared up, sharp and raw, but she forced her expression to remain stone-cold.
"What is that?" she asked, nodding toward the envelope.
"A DNA addendum," Julian said, his voice cracking slightly. "After our conversation at the lab, I couldn't just accept what Victor... what my mother told us. I ordered a private, independent genetic verification from an overseas lab. Not just checking maternal markers, but full genomic sequencing."
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She slowly stood up from her chair, walking around the desk to stand face-to-face with the man she had loved.
"What did it say, Julian?" she whispered.
Julian handed her the paper. His hand was trembling.
Elena unfolded the document and scanned the medical jargon until her eyes hit the concluding paragraph. She stopped breathing.
“Subject Julian Vance and Subject Elena Miller share zero genetic paternal markers. Furthermore, Subject Julian Vance’s paternal DNA matches Arthur Sterling at 99.99%.”
Elena’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with utter shock. She looked at Julian, her brain struggling to assemble the shattered pieces of reality.
"I'm not your brother," Julian whispered, a bitter, hollow smile touching his lips. "My mother lied about that too. Or rather... she didn't even know the truth herself. I am Arthur Sterling’s son. You are Victor Vance’s daughter. We share no blood at all."
The silence in the room was absolute.
The heavy chains wrapping around Elena’s heart suddenly snapped. The horrifying taboo that had torn them apart, that had made her shudder at his touch, that had poisoned their wedding day... was a lie.
Before she could speak, the doors of the suite burst open.
Arthur Sterling rushed in, followed by two armed security guards, his face pale with panic.
"Elena! Julian! You need to leave this building right now!" Arthur shouted, panting as he caught his breath.

"Arthur, what is this about?" Julian demanded, stepping between Arthur and Elena. "What's going on?"
"It’s Victor," Arthur said grimly, holding up his phone to display a live security feed of the Vance penthouse. "He didn't die ten years ago. He faked his death, and tonight, he’s holding Clara hostage in her own home. And he’s rigged the entire building with explosives."
