Chapter 2 - The Skeletons in the SafeThe VIP holding room behind the grand ballroom smelled of expensive cedarwood, fading panic, and the metallic tang of spilled champagne.

Clara sat rigidly on a velvet sofa, her hands clamped tightly over her lap to hide her uncontrollable shaking. Her legendary composure—the iron will that had kept the Vance Corporation afloat through three hostile takeovers—had completely shattered.
Standing across from her was Arthur Sterling, leaning casually against a mahogany desk, while Julian paced the Persian rug like a caged panther.
"Explain. Now," Julian ordered, his voice laced with venom as he glared at Arthur. "You walk into my wedding, disrupt the ceremony, and drop a bomb about my bride being my... what? Are you insane? Elena is an orphan from the southern districts. I checked her background myself when we met at Cambridge!"
"Did you?" Arthur raised an eyebrow, pulling a thick Manila folder from his leather briefcase and tossing it onto the table in front of Clara. "Or did your mother’s security detail ensure that every record you found was carefully sanitized? Clara is a master of deletion, Julian. She’s had thirty years to practice."
Clara flinched as if struck by a physical whip. She refused to look at the folder, her eyes fixed on a priceless oil painting on the wall.
"Look at it, Clara," Arthur urged softly, though his eyes were hard as flint. "Look at the police reports from October 14th, 1996. The night your firstborn daughter was stolen from the royal maternity ward."
Julian stopped pacing. He slowly turned his head to look at his mother. "Firstborn... daughter? Mother, you told me my sister died of a sudden fever when I was an infant. You told me she was buried in the family plot."
"I lied," Clara whispered, the words dragging out of her like rusty nails. Her voice was barely a breath. "I had to lie."
"You had to lie?" Julian exploded, slamming his palm against the desk so hard the silver stationery set rattled. "You lied about a human life? About my sister? Why?!"
"Because of him," Clara snarled suddenly, her head snapping up. Her eyes flashed with the manic fire of a woman pushed to the absolute edge. She pointed a trembling finger at Arthur Sterling. "Ask your precious mentor, Julian! Ask him whose child was in that crib! It wasn't just a random kidnapping. It was a war!"
Arthur’s face darkened instantly. The casual demeanor vanished, replaced by a cold, dangerous aura that matched Clara’s. "Don't you dare twist the narrative, Clara. You brought that war upon yourself when you married into the Vance family for power while carrying another man’s child in your womb."
The room plunged into a dead, suffocating silence.
Julian stared at Arthur, then back at his mother, his brain struggling to process the labyrinth of deceit unfolding before him. "What... what are you saying?"
"I am saying," Arthur said, stepping forward, "that thirty years ago, Clara was betrothed to me by family arrangement. But she dumped me for Victor Vance because the Vance empire offered more gold, more prestige. But she was already pregnant with my child. When Victor found out the baby wasn't his—or rather, when he threatened to disinherit her and take the child away—Clara panicked."
"I didn't want to lose everything!" Clara screamed, tears finally breaking over her lower eyelids and cutting tracks through her heavy makeup. "Victor was a monster! If he found out I carried another man's baby, he would have killed us both! I... I arranged to have the baby hidden. I paid a nurse to take her away to a safe family in the south, out of reach, where she could live safely while I stayed trapped in that gilded cage!"
"And you lost track of her," a calm, icy voice interrupted from the doorway.
The heavy oak door pushed open further. Elena stood there, no longer wearing the shredded lace gown, but dressed in a simple, elegant black silk slip dress. The imperial-green jade pendant hung securely around her slender neck on a silver chain. Her eyes were dry, burning with a terrifying intelligence.
"You didn't just hide me, Mrs. Vance," Elena said, stepping into the room. "You abandoned me in a corrupt state-run orphanage where children were sold off to the highest bidders. You lost the pendant on the night of the drop, and you never looked back because you were too busy enjoying your life as the queen of the Vance dynasty."
Clara stared at the young woman, seeing ghosts of her own youth staring back at her from the mirror of Elena's face. "Elena... my baby..."
"Don't call me that," Elena hissed, stepping right up to the sofa and looking down at the woman who had tried to destroy her minutes ago. "I spent twenty years wondering why I was unwanted. Twenty years fighting for every scrap of education, every meal, every opportunity, while you sat in your mansion buying diamonds with blood money. And when I finally climbed up into your world—when I met Julian and we fell in love—you tried to crush me."
Julian felt the room spinning. He looked at Elena, the woman he had promised to spend the rest of his life with, and felt a cold void open in his chest. "Elena... if you are my mother’s daughter... that means..."
May you like
He couldn't finish the sentence. The horrific math of the situation slammed into his mind with the force of a freight train.
If Elena was Clara’s lost biological daughter... then Julian and Elena were brother and sister.
