He had been investigating him.
For years.
The fake deaths.
The hidden accounts.
The foundation.
Everything.
He had discovered that Richard planned to take control of the company through Vanessa.
But Daniel had been too late.
Vanessa pulled out her own weapon.
Marcus moved.
A shot shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
I grabbed Lily.
Marcus pushed his mother behind a desk.
Daniel fired again.
Vanessa ran.
Richard disappeared through another door.
Marcus chased him.
I stayed with Lily.
“Mommy?”
“I'm here.”
“I don't like this game.”
“It's not a game.”
I held her tightly.
Then I heard footsteps.
Marcus returned.
“Where's Richard?”
“Gone.”
“Vanessa?”
“Gone too.”
Daniel entered.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because the police are coming.”
Marcus stared.
“How?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Vanessa called them.”
“She what?”
“She plans to make it look like you attacked your father.”
Marcus understood immediately.
The room was filled with weapons.
Richard had disappeared.
Vanessa was gone.
The evidence could be manipulated.
Marcus would become the suspect.
Daniel handed him a drive.
“This contains everything.”
Marcus took it.
“Why help me?”
Daniel smiled sadly.

Then the lights went out.
