Chapter 13 - Eleanor's SisterEleanor told us the story that night.

Evelyn Cole had been her older sister.

Brilliant.

Ambitious.

Fearless.

And dangerous.

She had discovered the original foundation network before Richard did.

But Evelyn hadn't wanted to destroy it.

She wanted to control it.

"When your father found out," Eleanor said, "he tried to stop her."

Marcus listened silently.

"What happened?"

"They fought."

"About the money?"

"No."

Eleanor looked at him.

"About power."

She explained that Evelyn had created a private network of accounts hidden inside the foundation.

Not for herself.

For influence.

Politicians.

Judges.

Executives.

People who could change laws.

People who could erase records.

People who could make someone disappear.

Marcus's face hardened.

"And Richard?"

"He wanted out."

"That's why he disappeared?"

"Partly."

Marcus looked at me.

"Then why did you tell everyone Evelyn was dead?"

Eleanor's voice cracked.

"Because I killed her."

The room went silent.

Marcus stood.

"What?"

"I didn't physically kill her."

"Then what did you do?"

"I exposed her."

Eleanor looked toward the window.

"She was arrested."

Marcus stared.

"Then how did she survive?"

"We never found her body."

I felt a chill.

"Then she could have survived."

Eleanor nodded.

"That's what I'm afraid of."

Lily had been drawing quietly in the corner.

She suddenly lifted her paper.

"Mommy."

"What?"

She showed me the drawing.

Three women.

Eleanor.

Evelyn.

And another woman.

The third woman had no face.

Marcus looked at it.

"Who is that?"

Lily shrugged.

"She told me."

"Who?"

"The lady."

"What did she tell you?"

Lily looked at Marcus.

"She said Grandma lied."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Marcus stared at his mother.

"About what?"

May you like

Lily answered before Eleanor could.

"About where the money went."
