Chapter 20 - The Door Beneath the HospitalEmergency lights flickered on.

Red.

One by one.

The basement doors began opening.

Marcus pulled me behind a concrete wall.

Evelyn stood beside us.

Daniel checked his weapon.

Lily held Mr. Bun.

"Stay close," I whispered.

She nodded.

Footsteps approached.

Then a man appeared.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Marcus stared.

"No."

The man smiled.

"Hello, grandson."

Marcus's face went white.

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Marcus whispered:

"My grandfather."

The man smiled.

"You've been looking for me."

Marcus raised his weapon.

"You died."

"No."

"You've been dead for thirty years."

"I was hiding."

"Why?"

"Because your family became dangerous."

Marcus stepped forward.

"You created all of this."

His grandfather shook his head.

"I created the protection network."

"You created the Circle."

"No."

He looked toward Evelyn.

"She did."

Evelyn's face changed.

Marcus stared at her.

"You?"

Evelyn lowered her head.

"I was trying to protect the children."

His grandfather continued.

"Your mother wanted power."

"Richard wanted freedom."

"Evelyn wanted control."

"And you?"

The old man smiled.

"I wanted my family alive."

Marcus lowered his weapon.

For the first time, nobody knew who was telling the truth.

Then Lily walked forward.

She pointed at the floor.

"There's a door."

Everyone stopped.

Marcus looked down.

"What?"

Lily pointed again.

"Under there."

They moved the old metal cabinet.

Beneath it was a steel door.

A keypad.

Marcus tried his father's birthday.

Wrong.

His mother's.

Wrong.

His grandfather's.

Wrong.

Lily reached toward the keypad.

"Can I?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then nodded.

She pressed three numbers.

The door opened.

Everyone stared.

Marcus whispered:

"How did you know?"

Lily shrugged.

"Grandpa told me."

The room beneath the hospital was enormous.

Inside were shelves.

Files.

Photographs.

Money.

And hundreds of sealed boxes.

On the far wall was a single sentence:

THE CHILDREN ARE THE KEY TO THE FUTURE.

Marcus walked toward it.

Then stopped.

A photograph was pinned beneath the words.

It showed Lily.

Beside her stood my mother.

Both alive.

The photograph had been taken that morning.

My heart stopped.

Marcus turned toward me.

"Your mother is here."

I stared.

Then we heard footsteps behind us.

A woman's voice whispered from the darkness.

"I've been waiting for you."

I knew that voice.

My mother's.

She stepped into the light.

Alive.

Older.

But smiling.

And beside her stood Eleanor Cole.

Marcus's mother.

The two women looked at each other.

Then at us.

Eleanor spoke first.

"Now you finally know why Lily was brought into this family."

I held my daughter tighter.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Why?"

Eleanor looked at Lily.

"Because she isn't just the heir to the money."

She paused.

"She's the only person who can unlock everything your grandfather built."

The lights came on.

Every screen in the underground room activated.

Hundreds of names appeared.

Politicians.

Billionaires.

Judges.

Executives.

And at the top of the screen was one final name.

MARCUS COLE.

Underneath it appeared a message:

THE LAST HEIR HAS BEEN ACTIVATED.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then Lily looked up at him.

"Uncle Marcus?"

He knelt.

"Yes?"

She whispered:

"Is this another secret?"

Marcus looked around the underground room.

Then at his mother.

At Richard.

At Evelyn.

At Daniel.

At me.

Finally, he looked at Lily.

"No."

He took her hand.

"This time, we're opening every door."

And somewhere deep beneath the hospital, another door unlocked.

The sound echoed through the darkness.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then dozens of locks clicked open at once.

Whatever Marcus's family had buried for decades was no longer buried.

It was awake.

And this time, the little girl who had once followed a billionaire into a forbidden security room wasn't going to accidentally discover the truth.

May you like

She was going to lead them straight to it.
