Chapter 6 - THE HOME WE BUILT

One year later.

The grand courtyard of the Moretti estate was completely transformed.

White linen canopies stretched across the stone arches, decorated with cascades of white roses, eucalyptus, and twinkling fairy lights. The heavy iron gates were thrown wide open, welcoming over two hundred guests—business leaders, city officials, former rivals turned legitimate partners, and dozens of smiling children running across the manicured lawns.

It was the wedding of the decade in Chicago, but inside the gates, it felt like a intimate family celebration.

Near the altar, erected beside the ancient oak tree where Emma had first bathed Bruno, stood Alessandro. He looked impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo, his graying temples giving him an air of distinguished authority. Standing beside him as his best man was Marco Bellini, wearing a wide, proud grin.

The music shifted into a gentle, melodic string quartet.

The crowd stood up, turning toward the stone steps of the main house.

First came Emma. Now four years old, she wore a miniature white lace dress with a crown of yellow daisies in her hair. She walked down the aisle with total confidence, holding a basket of rose petals, scattering them with enthusiastic, wild tosses.

And walking right beside her, wearing a sleek black silk bow tie attached to his leather collar, was Bruno.

The giant Cane Corso walked slowly, his head held high, his silver-muzzled face looking serene and regal. He didn't look at the crowd. He kept his golden eyes fixed entirely on Emma, guarding her every step down the carpeted pathway.

The crowd let out a collective, soft sigh of affection at the sight of the notorious "beast" acting as the gentlest ring bearer in the city's history.

Then, Sophia appeared at the top of the steps.

She took everyone’s breath away. Her dress was a masterpiece of simple, elegant ivory silk that flowed gracefully around her frame. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, and her face radiated a pure, unshakeable happiness that lit up the entire courtyard.

As she walked down the aisle toward Alessandro, his chest tightened with an emotion so profound it brought rare tears to the corners of his eyes.

When she reached the altar, Alessandro took her hands in his.

"You look breathtaking," he whispered.

"You look like a man who finally has everything he needs," she replied softly.

The ceremony was brief, beautiful, and deeply personal. When the minister declared them husband and wife, Alessandro pulled Sophia into his arms, kissing her deeply as the entire courtyard erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

Emma threw a handful of rose petals directly into the air above their heads, giggling wildly, while Bruno let out a loud, joyous bark that echoed across the estate gardens.

Late that evening, after the music had softened and the guests were enjoying cake under the twinkling lights of the pavilion, Alessandro walked away from the crowd to stand by the edge of the fountain.

He looked back at his home.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the sunroom, he could see the life he had built.

Inside, Sophia was sitting on a plush sofa, laughing with Marco and Dr. Richard Hale. On the rug in front of them, Emma had fallen fast asleep, curled up with her pink blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

And lying right beside her, his giant black body curled into a protective crescent moon around the sleeping child, was Bruno. The old dog’s tail gave two lazy wags against the floor as he saw Alessandro looking through the window.

Alessandro smiled—a deep, peaceful smile that reached all the way to his soul.

The empire he had built out of fear and violence was completely gone, replaced by something far more powerful, far more enduring, and entirely unbreakable.

He had built a home.

Alessandro turned back toward the warm lights of the house, stepped through the doors, and walked inside to join his family.
