Chapter 1 - THE SILENT OATH

"Sit," Emma repeated, her voice tiny but absolute in the doorway of the small cottage apartment. Her small, warm fingers remained locked around two of Alessandro Moretti’s large, scarred fingers.

Sophia stepped forward instinctively, her pulse hammering in her throat. "Emma, sweetie, let go of Mr. Moretti. He has work to do, and Bruno belongs in the main house."

"No," Emma insisted, looking up into the face of a man who commanded hundreds of dangerous men across the Midwest. "Bruno’s leg hurts. He likes the rug because it has sunshine on it."

Alessandro didn't pull his hand away. He stared down at the three-year-old child whose top reached barely above his knee. For the first time in over fifteen years, the ruthless boss of the Moretti syndicate felt entirely out of his depth.

Slowly, methodically, the man whose name made Chicago prosecutors sweat unbuttoned his wool overcoat, draped it over the back of a wooden chair, and sat down on the edge of the worn sofa.

Bruno let out a deep, snorting sigh of approval and laid his heavy chin back across Emma’s pink blanket.

"He stays for the night," Alessandro said, his voice low and raspy. He looked at Sophia, who was standing stiffly by the kitchen counter. "Mrs. Carter."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Your daughter has... unusual authority."

"She doesn't know who you are, sir," Sophia said quietly, keeping her hands tucked into the pockets of her gray maid's apron. "She only sees what's right in front of her."

Alessandro’s dark eyes lingered on Sophia’s pale face. He noticed the slight shadow beneath her eyes, the delicate frame beneath the oversized uniform, and the fierce, protective edge that flared whenever he moved too close to her child. "And what do you see, Mrs. Carter?"

"I see a dog that hasn't slept in peace for years, and a man who forgot how to ask for help," Sophia said, her voice steady despite the sheer terror dancing in her chest.

Behind Alessandro, Marco Bellini—who had followed his boss to the doorway—flinched slightly. Nobody spoke to Alessandro like that. But Alessandro merely leaned back, resting his elbows on his knees.

"You're very bold for someone whose employment relies on my goodwill," Alessandro noted, though there was no malice in his tone.

"My daughter’s safety is not up for negotiation, Mr. Moretti," Sophia replied. "If you want Bruno back, you can take him. But if he bites her, I will kill him myself, regardless of who owns him."

Alessandro looked from Sophia to the massive Cane Corso currently snoring on the floor. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched the corner of his lips. "Fair enough."

For the next three weeks, an unspoken rhythm developed on the estate. Every morning, Bruno would wait outside the cottage door until Emma emerged. Together, the little girl in her red coat and the giant black dog limped through the gardens. Every evening, Alessandro found himself walking away from the high-stakes phone calls in his leather-bound study to stand by the courtyard window, watching the strange pair.

And every evening, Alessandro found an excuse to walk down to the cottage. Sometimes he brought specialized veterinary medicine prescribed by Dr. Richard Hale. Other times, he simply brought fresh pastries from the estate's kitchen—claiming the chef had made too many.

"You're spending a lot of time near the east gate, Boss," Marco warned one evening as they stood in the study. "The Valenti family has been pushing hard on the docks. Dominic Valenti is asking questions about why you've turned down three sit-downs this month."

"Dominic Valenti can wait," Alessandro said coldly, staring out at the snow-covered lawn where Emma was trying to teach Bruno how to catch a pinecone.

"He thinks you're going soft," Marco added cautiously. "He heard about the dog. Word on the street is that Moretti’s beast was tamed by a maid's child."

Alessandro turned slowly. The warmth that had been creeping into his eyes over the past month vanished instantly, replaced by the terrifying, glacial stillness that had built his empire. "If Dominic Valenti mentions that child's name, or my dog, I will feed him to the fish in Lake Michigan. Make that explicitly clear to his associates."

"Understood, Boss."

What Alessandro didn't realize was that Dominic Valenti had already placed eyes inside the estate. A low-level security guard, deeply in debt from gambling, had already taken a photograph of Emma sitting on the porch, feeding pieces of apple to the feared Cane Corso, while Alessandro stood nearby holding her stuffed bear, Mr. Buttons.

To a rival syndicate looking for leverage against an invincible man, that photograph was better than gold. It was a roadmap to Alessandro Moretti’s heart.
