Chapter 4 - THE STORM ON 47TH STREET

The old meatpacking plant looked like a giant, rotting beast against the backdrop of the swirling blizzard. Rusted iron beams jutted into the dark sky, and flickering yellow lights illuminated the broken windows of the second floor.

Inside, ten heavy-set guards armed with automatic weapons paced around a dimly lit warehouse floor. In the center of the room, tied gently to a small wooden chair, sat Emma. Her stuffed bear lay on the floor a few feet away, its arm ripped.

Dominic Valenti sat on an overturned crate, sipping whiskey from a flask, checking his gold watch. "Ten minutes to midnight. Moretti’s late."

"Boss, what if he doesn't sign?" one of the gunmen asked nervously. "He’s got half the city blocked off. My cousin in the police department said Moretti’s men are standing outside every station house in the city."

"He'll sign," Valenti laughed, though his own eyes darted toward the heavy steel doors. "The man’s soft. He let a maid's kid take over his estate. He’s finished."

Outside, the freezing wind roared.

Suddenly, the lights inside the warehouse flickered once. Twice. Then went completely dark.

"What the hell?" Valenti stood up, drawing his handgun. "Check the generator!"

Before anyone could move, a deafening explosion shattered the north wall of the warehouse. Bricks, concrete, and iron beams rained down in a cloud of blinding dust and fire.

Through the smoke, a heavy tactical vehicle rammed directly through the main doors, its high-beam halogen headlights blinding the gunmen inside.

"Fire! Fire!" Valenti screamed.

Gunfire erupted across the warehouse, bright muzzle flashes illuminating the darkness. But Alessandro’s force did not advance like street thugs. They moved like a military unit—flanking the guards, disabling them with lethal, calculated precision.

Standing at the front of the storm, wearing a heavy tactical vest over his suit, was Alessandro Moretti. He fired two precise shots, dropping the gunman standing closest to Emma.

"Sophia! Stay behind Marco!" Alessandro roared over the chaos.

Sophia didn't care about the gunfire. She sprinted through the blinding smoke toward her daughter. "Emma!"

Valenti, realizing he was completely outmatched, lunged forward, grabbing Emma by her coat collar and dragging her back toward the emergency exit stairs. "Stay back, Moretti! Or I drop her off the ledge!"

Alessandro stepped through the smoke, his custom pistol aimed directly at Valenti’s head. "Put the child down, Dominic."

"You lost, Alessandro!" Valenti yelled, his hand shaking as he pressed a gun near Emma’s side. "Give me the docks, or she dies!"

Emma was crying now, reaching her small arms toward her mother. "Mommy! Mommy!"

Suddenly, a massive, dark shape exploded out of the shadows near the rusty machinery.

It didn't sound like a dog. It sounded like a demon breaking free from hell.

Despite a shattered leg and a bullet wound patched with bandages, Bruno leaped across a six-foot gap from the mezzanine platform, his 130-pound frame slamming directly into Dominic Valenti’s chest.

Valenti let out a terrified scream as he was hurled backward onto the cold concrete floor. The gun flew from his hand, skittering across the ice.

Bruno pinned Valenti to the floor, his massive jaws locking around the man's forearm, shaking him like a ragdoll. Valenti’s screams echoed off the high rafters of the warehouse.

"Get him off me! Get him off me! My God, he's killing me!" Valenti shrieked.

Emma slid across the slick floor, away from the struggle. Sophia slid on her knees, wrapping her arms around her daughter, pulling her tightly against her chest, sobbing uncontrollably. "I have you, baby! Mommy has you!"

Alessandro stepped over Valenti, who was bleeding profusely on the ground beneath Bruno’s massive paws.

Alessandro looked down at the dog. "Bruno. Release."

The dog didn't move for three agonizing seconds. His yellow eyes were burning with pure rage, his teeth sunken deep into the flesh of the man who had hurt his small friend.

Emma looked up from her mother’s chest, her tiny voice cutting through the smell of gunpowder and blood. "Bruno... stop. He's sorry."

The giant dog froze. Slowly, his jaws unclenched. He let go of Valenti’s arm, turned away from the sobbing mobster, and limped stiffly over to Emma, collapsing heavily onto the floor beside her, placing his wet nose against her cheek.

Alessandro turned his attention to Valenti, who was whimpering on the floor, clutching his shattered arm.

"Please, Alessandro..." Valenti begged, tears mixing with the blood on his face. "Please... don't kill me..."

Alessandro looked at the man who had dared to threaten a three-year-old child. He raised his weapon, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Alessandro," Sophia’s voice called out softly from behind him.

He paused, looking back over his shoulder.

Sophia was holding Emma, who was staring at him with big, innocent eyes.

"Don't do it in front of her," Sophia pleaded softly. "She’s seen enough dark things tonight. Let us go home."

Alessandro stared at Sophia for a long moment. Then, slowly, he lowered his weapon and handed it to Marco.

"Lock him in the basement at the docks," Alessandro commanded Marco. "Let the federal prosecutors have him tomorrow morning. Make sure every piece of evidence regarding his human trafficking and extortion operations is delivered to the US Attorney's office. Dominic Valenti will spend the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security cell."

"Understood, Boss," Marco nodded, signaling for four guards to drag the screaming mobster away.

Alessandro knelt in front of Sophia and Emma. He reached out with a hand that had commanded an empire, gently touching Emma’s tear-stained cheek.

"I promised you I would bring Mr. Buttons back," Alessandro said softly, pulling the somewhat dirty teddy bear from his coat pocket and handing it to her.

Emma’s face lit up. She snatched the bear, hugging it to her chest, then reached out and wrapped her tiny arms around Alessandro’s neck. "Thank you, Mr. Alessandro."

For the first time in his adult life, Alessandro Moretti closed his eyes and let out a long, ragged breath, holding the little girl tight while Sophia leaned her head against his shoulder.
