Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OVER THE ESTATE

The winter storm hit Chicago on a Tuesday afternoon, wrapping the Moretti estate in a thick, suffocating blanket of white fog and heavy snow.

Inside the main house, the energy was tense. Phone lines were buzzing, security guards were pacing the perimeter, and Alessandro was surrounded by his senior lieutenants in the tactical war room beneath the mansion.

"Valenti made his move on the West Side warehouses," Marco reported, slamming a map onto the wooden table. "He’s trying to force a territory war while the weather keeps our main fleet grounded."

Alessandro leaned over the map, his jaw set like granite. "Deploy the second unit to the docks. Lock down the northern perimeter. No one leaves this estate until I give the word."

While the men prepared for war, Sophia was finishing her cleaning rounds in the guest wing. The wind howled against the stained-glass windows, rattling the heavy wooden frames. She felt an eerie, unnatural shiver run down her spine—a instinct honed by years of surviving on her own after her husband’s death.

"Emma?" she called out, stepping out into the hallway.

Emma had been playing in the small sunroom near the kitchen, monitored by one of the housemaids. But when Sophia reached the sunroom, it was empty. The door leading out to the side garden was ajar, swinging gently in the freezing wind, leaving a dusting of snow on the polished marble floor.

Panic, instant and icy, seized Sophia’s lungs. "Emma!"

She rushed to the doorway. Outside, fresh footprints led into the blinding white fog toward the old carriage house. And beside the small footprints were heavy, erratic paw prints.

Bruno had followed her.

"Emma!" Sophia screamed into the storm, wrapping her coat tightly around herself as she plunged into the snowbank.

Fifty yards away, near the heavy iron gates of the carriage house, two black SUVs sat idling with their lights extinguished. Three men in tactical gear stepped out of the shadow of the brick wall. One of them held a heavy canvas sack.

Emma was kneeling in the snow, trying to pull a thorn from Bruno’s right paw. "Hold still, Bruno. Mommy's coming..."

"Grab the kid!" a harsh voice barked through the wind.

Before the men could reach her, Bruno let out a roar that echoed across the entire estate—a sound not of pain or fear, but of pure, ancient fury. The Cane Corso reared up on his good hind leg, his jaws snapping inches from the first man's face.

"Shoot the damn dog!" the leader yelled, drawing a suppressed pistol.

Thwack.

A muffled shot rang out. Bruno collapsed into the snow with a agonizing whine, blood blooming instantly across his left shoulder.

"Bruno!" Emma shrieked, throwing her tiny body across the dog’s neck. "Don't hurt him! Don't hurt my dog!"

A heavy hand grabbed Emma by the collar of her red coat, yanking her away from the bleeding animal. Sophia rounded the corner of the carriage house just in time to see her daughter being shoved into the backseat of the black SUV.

"No! Stop! Take me instead!" Sophia screamed, sprinting blindly through the snow drifts.

One of the men turned, leveling his gun at Sophia's chest. "Back off, lady, or you don't survive to see tomorrow."

He slammed the SUV door shut. The heavy tires spun against the ice, gripping the gravel road, and the vehicle roared out through the side gate, disappearing into the blinding white fog of the storm.

Sophia fell to her knees in the snow, her chest heaving, her vision going completely red. Beside her, Bruno was dragging his heavy, bloodied body through the snow toward the tire tracks, letting out gut-wrenching whines of failure.

A second later, the heavy iron doors of the main house slammed open. Alessandro sprinted down the steps, followed by Marco and ten armed security men.

When Alessandro saw Sophia sobbing in the snow beside the bleeding dog, the world seemed to stop moving.

"Sophia!" Alessandro dropped to his knees beside her, grabbing her shoulders. "Where is she? Where is Emma?!"

Sophia looked up, her eyes wide with total, unadulterated agony. She grabbed Alessandro’s lapels, her nails digging through the expensive wool. "They took her, Alessandro! They took my baby!"
