Chapter 3 - THE EMPIRE AWAKENS

Alessandro did not yell. He did not curse. He did not smash the furniture or tear through the house in a frenzy.

Instead, the temperature in the entire Moretti estate plummeted into absolute zero.

"Marco," Alessandro said, standing up smoothly from the snow. His voice was so terrifyingly calm that even the veteran security chief took an involuntary step back.

"Boss?"

"Call every captain in Chicago. Call the unions, the dockworkers, the precinct commanders, the judges, and the street leaders. Tell them that as of five minutes ago, the city of Chicago is closed."

"Closed, sir?"

"No trucks leave the state. No boats leave the harbor. No planes take off from private airstrips. If a car moves across city limits without my permission, burn it." Alessandro looked down at Bruno, who was struggling to lift his head, his black fur slick with blood. "Get Richard here now. Save my dog. If he dies, everyone responsible for his care dies with him."

Within twenty minutes, the basement war room was transformed into an apocalyptic command center. Maps of Illinois, satellite tracking feeds, and police scanner audio filled dozens of screens.

Sophia sat in a chair in the corner, wrapped in a heavy blanket, shivering uncontrollably. Her hands were stained with Bruno’s blood. Dr. Richard Hale was working frantically in the adjoining room, operating on the dog on a improvised stainless-steel table.

Alessandro walked over to Sophia, holding a glass of warm water. He knelt in front of her, setting the glass on her knee.

"Look at me, Sophia," he commanded softly.

She looked up, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "She's three years old, Alessandro. She doesn't understand... she's going to be so scared..."

"Listen to my voice," Alessandro said, taking her trembling hands in his own. "I gave you my word that she would be safe on this property. I failed you today. But I swear on my mother’s grave, on my life, and on every drop of blood in my body: I will bring Emma home before the sun rises tomorrow. And the men who touched her will regret the day they were born."

A commotion erupted at the top of the stairs. Marco burst into the room, holding a encrypted satellite phone.

"Boss! It’s Dominic Valenti. He’s calling from an untraceable line."

Alessandro stood up seamlessly. He took the phone and pressed it to his ear. "Dominic."

A greasy, arrogant laugh echoed over the speaker. "Alessandro! How’s the winter weather up there? I hear you lost something valuable today. A little red coat, was it?"

"If she has a single scratch on her, Dominic, I will skin you alive in front of your family," Alessandro said, his tone devoid of any emotion.

"Listen to me very carefully, Moretti," Valenti sneered. "You’ve been squeezing my family out of the port authority for five years. You want the girl back? You sign over the dock rights, the downtown casinos, and you step down as head of the Commission by midnight. Otherwise, the kid goes into the river."

"Let me speak to her," Alessandro demanded.

A pause on the line. Then, the faint, trembling sound of a child crying came through the speaker.

"Mommy? Mr. Alessandro?" Emma’s voice whimpered. "I want to go home. The bad man took Mr. Buttons..."

"Emma," Alessandro’s voice softened instantly, a tone his lieutenants had never heard him use in thirty years of mob warfare. "Listen to me, sweetheart. Are you hurt?"

"No... but it's dark."

"I know it's dark, baby. But listen to me: do you remember what I told you about Bruno?"

"He... he's brave?"

"He’s very brave. And you are the bravest girl in the world. I am coming to get you right now. Stay right where you are, okay?"

"Okay... bring Bruno too?"

"I’ll bring Bruno," Alessandro promised. "I'll see you soon."

Valenti snatched the phone back. "Midnight, Moretti. Or she disappears." The line went dead.

Alessandro handed the phone back to Marco. "Where was the signal bounced from?"

"Near the old meatpacking district by the canal," Marco replied, typing rapidly on his laptop. "Abandon processing plant on 47th Street."

At that moment, the door to the medical room swung open. Dr. Richard Hale stepped out, wearing blood-stained scrubs. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were resolute.

"The bullet missed the artery," Richard said, wiping his brow. "I patched the muscle and stabilized his leg. He shouldn't be walking, but..."

Behind Richard, a massive black shape staggered through the doorway.

Bruno was wrapped in heavy medical bandages around his torso, leaning heavily against the doorframe, his breath ragged. But his yellow eyes were fixed entirely on Alessandro and Sophia. He let out a low, determined bark, staggering toward the front exit.

Alessandro looked at the dog, then at Sophia.

"He knows where she is," Sophia whispered, standing up from her chair. "He smells her."

Alessandro looked down at his security chief. "Get the convoy ready. Every man we have. We're going to war."
