Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

Two hours later, a dark SUV pulled up to the rear entrance of the Carver mansion. I rushed down the hallway, completely ignoring my physical fatigue, bursting through the doors just as Daniel stepped out of the vehicle.
Behind him walked Caleb. He looked thin, his clothes covered in dust, and his face bruised from weeks of isolation, but his eyes were bright and alive.
"Hannah!" he cried, lunging forward to wrap me in a fierce, protective hug. We held each other for what felt like an eternity, weeping for the losses we had endured, but celebrating the survival we had fought to achieve.
"Thank you," I whispered over Caleb's shoulder, looking directly at Daniel, who stood near the car, watching our reunion with a quiet, proud satisfaction in his eyes. "Thank you for saving my family, Daniel."
"We are family now, Hannah," Daniel said softly, stepping closer and resting a gentle hand on Caleb's shoulder. "Aaron's blood runs in that baby. That means my blood runs in that baby. Anyone who touches you touches me."
Before we could enter the safety of the house, a sudden, bright spotlight illuminated the entire backyard.
A fleet of federal law enforcement vehicles, led by a sharp-eyed state prosecutor named Attorney General Vance, pulled onto the grass. From the passenger side of the lead vehicle stepped Richard Whitlock, handcuffed but glaring at us with a desperate, venomous fury.
"Daniel Carver!" Attorney General Vance announced through a megaphone. "We have a warrant for the immediate seizure of all records related to the Providence waterfront logistics. Richard Whitlock has just state-turned evidence, claiming you orchestrated the ghost accounts and the murder of Aaron Brooks!"
Richard Whitlock laughed, a manic, broken sound from the back of the police escort. "If I’m going down, Carver, I’m taking you with me! You’re a mafia boss! The courts will believe a legitimate businessman over a waterfront thug any day!"

Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't reach for a weapon. He simply looked at Caleb, who pulled a thick, leather-bound notebook from beneath his jacket—the true, unredacted ledger of the ghost accounts.
"You're right, Richard," Daniel said, his voice echoing clearly across the lawn. "The courts do believe legitimate documentation. Which is why Caleb is going to hand over the encrypted routing numbers that show every single dollar of those ghost accounts went directly into your personal offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Signed, authorized, and stamped by Whitlock Shipping."
