Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Waterfront

The room seemed to lose all its air. I stared at Daniel, my lips parting but no sound coming out. "Your... your brother's grandchild? What are you talking about? Aaron was an orphan. He grew up in the state system."

Daniel let out a long, heavy breath, sitting on the edge of the coffee table across from me. "Aaron wasn't an orphan, Hannah. His real name was Aaron Carver. He was my younger brother, hidden away thirty years ago when our father’s enemies blew up the family estate. To protect him, he was given to a foster family under the name Brooks, completely disconnected from the Carver bloodline. I spent fifteen years searching for him. I finally found him nine months ago, working on the docks."

"Nine months ago..." I whispered, the timeline slamming into my mind like a physical blow. "That was right before we got married."

"Yes," Daniel nodded, his eyes misting over with a rare, raw vulnerability. "I approached him. I told him who he was. But Aaron didn't want the mafia life. He told me he was in love with a beautiful woman named Hannah, and that he wanted a simple life, a yellow room for a baby, and a job that smelled like diesel instead of blood. I respected that. I gave him my blessing and swore to protect him from the shadows."

He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white.

"But Richard Whitlock found out Aaron was a Carver. He thought by eliminating Aaron, he could weaken my grip on the port and force me into a marriage alliance with his daughter, Claire, to secure his shipping empire. Whitlock murdered my brother, Hannah. And he thinks he’s going to use my family name to legitimize his stolen blood money."

The puzzle pieces finally crashed together in my mind with terrifying clarity. Aaron’s death wasn't an accident. My presence in this mansion wasn't a coincidence. The universe had brought me to the one man who loved Aaron as much as I did.

"And my brother, Caleb?" I asked, desperation clawing at my throat. "He called me before he disappeared. He said someone was moving money under the Carver name, but that you didn't know."

Daniel’s expression turned grim. "Caleb was a brilliant bookkeeper, Hannah. He stumbled onto a ghost account inside my logistics firm—a money-laundering pipeline set up by a mole inside my organization, working directly with Richard Whitlock. Caleb didn't disappear because he ran away. He disappeared because he went into hiding to protect the ledger that proves the entire conspiracy."

"Is he alive?" I pleaded, grabbing Daniel’s hand. "Daniel, please, is my brother alive?"

"We found a safehouse layout in Aaron's old workbench yesterday," Daniel said, his grip tightening around my hand, warm and reassuring. "Aaron was planning to extract Caleb the night he died. We know where he is, Hannah. And tomorrow, we’re bringing him home."
