Chapter 2 - The Silent Code

The estate doctor, a quiet, silver-haired man named Dr. Jude, worked quickly. Within twenty minutes, he had administered a safe, fast-acting sedative to halt the stress-induced contractions. The tight, terrifying pressure in my abdomen slowly began to release, leaving me exhausted but breathing normally.

"The baby is stable, Mrs. Brooks," Dr. Jude said, packing his stethoscope into his leather bag. "But you need absolute bed rest for the next forty-eight hours. No heavy lifting, no pantry duty, and absolutely no stress. Do you understand?"

"She understands," Daniel said from the doorway. He had changed into a dark sweater, his shirt sleeves rolled up to reveal the heavy, faded scars on his forearms—reminders of the docks he had fought to conquer. He handed Dr. Jude a thick envelope. "Thank you, Jude. Keep this entirely off the insurance records."

Once the doctor left, the room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. I tried to sit up, but Daniel stepped forward, his large hand gently pressing against my shoulder to keep me laid back.

"Stay down," he murmured.

"Mr. Carver," I began, my voice trembling as I looked at the jagged, ruined section of hair near my left temple. "I'm sorry for the trouble tonight. I didn't mean to cause a scene between you and Miss Whitlock. I can pack my things and leave in the morning. I know I still owe the Whitlock company the seventy thousand dollars for Aaron's debt, but—"

"You don't owe them a single dime, Hannah," Daniel interrupted, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch.

I stared at him, confused. "What do you mean? Aaron signed the loan papers. They showed them to me the day after his funeral."

Daniel walked over to his massive mahogany desk, unlocked a hidden drawer, and pulled out a manila folder. He tossed it onto the sofa beside me. "Those papers are a complete forgery, Hannah. I had Marcus run a forensic analysis on the signatures last week. Your husband never borrowed money from Richard Whitlock. Aaron was a harbor mechanic who refused to let Whitlock's men use his maintenance shed to smuggle untaxed contraband through my docks."

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. "Aaron refused them? But the authorities said it was an accident. They said he slipped."

"He didn't slip," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "He was pushed. And the man who ordered it was Richard Whitlock. They used the fake debt to force you into a position where you couldn't investigate, completely unaware that you would choose to come directly into my home."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes, hot and furious. "If you knew this... why did you let me keep scrubbing your floors? Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel stepped closer, leaning down so his face was inches from mine. "Because until tonight, I didn't know who was leaking my shipping manifests to the feds. I needed to see who you were working for, Hannah. But when Claire cut your hair tonight... I saw the way you protected that belly. A woman working for the Whitlocks wouldn't look at a Carver child with that much love."

He paused, his gaze dropping to my stomach.

"And a Whitlock operative wouldn't be carrying my late brother's grandchild."
