Chapter 9 - The Family They Chose

The threat changed everything.
Daniel refused to let fear control their lives.
He moved Maria and Sofia temporarily to a secure property.
But he didn't tell Sofia why.
To her, it was an adventure.
She called the lake house "the secret castle."
Maria laughed more during those weeks than she had in years.
Daniel began cooking.
Badly.
Very badly.
His first attempt at pancakes produced something resembling construction material.
Sofia took one bite.
"Mr. Hale."
"Yes?"
"Did you make these?"
"Yes."
She considered.
"Maybe we should call the chef."
Maria burst out laughing.
Daniel stared at them.
Then he laughed too.
It was the kind of laughter that didn't feel forced.
That night, after Sofia went to bed, Maria and Daniel sat on the porch.
"I never imagined this," she whispered.
"Neither did I."
She looked at him.
"You were so cold when I met you."
"I know."
"You scared me."
"I know."
"Now you're making terrible pancakes."
Daniel smiled.
"I'm improving."
"Slowly."
He looked at her.
"Maria."
"Yes?"
"I love you."
She froze.
Daniel didn't look away.
"I don't know when it happened."
He continued.
"Maybe when Sofia gave me that blanket."
Maria's eyes filled.
"Maybe when you started leaving coffee outside my office."
She laughed softly.
"Maybe when I realized the house sounded different when you weren't in it."
Maria wiped away a tear.
"I love you too."
Daniel took her hand.
Then they heard a noise.
A car.
Headlights appeared beyond the trees.
Security moved immediately.
Daniel stood.
Maria pulled Sofia close.
A vehicle stopped at the gate.
A woman stepped out.
She was elderly.
Silver-haired.
Elegant.
Daniel recognized her.
His father's former attorney.
She held a briefcase.
"I need to speak with Daniel."
Security brought her inside.
She placed the briefcase on the table.
"The organization is finished."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why are you here?"
"Because one person remains."
"Who?"
She looked at Maria.
"Your father."
Maria froze.
"My father?"
The woman nodded.
"He survived."
Maria's knees nearly gave out.
Daniel caught her.
"Where is he?"
The woman smiled sadly.
"He's been hiding for eighteen years."
Maria began crying.
"Why?"
"Because he knew they would kill you."
The woman opened the briefcase.
Inside were photographs.
Maria as a child.
Her father.
And another man.
Gabriel.
The truth was devastating.
Gabriel had not originally been Maria's enemy.
He had been her father's partner.
Then he betrayed him.
Her father disappeared.
Gabriel blamed Maria for exposing the network.
Everything had begun with betrayal.
But there was more.
Maria's father was alive.
And he wanted to come home.
The meeting happened two days later.
Maria saw him through the window.
She stopped breathing.
He looked older.
Smaller.
But alive.
Her father stepped inside.
"Maria."
She stared at him.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then she ran.
They embraced.
Years of anger collapsed into tears.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"I thought you left me."
"I never did."
He held her tighter.
"I watched you from a distance."
"Why didn't you come back?"
"Because I thought my enemies would kill you."
Maria cried against his shoulder.
"I needed you."
"I know."
Daniel stood nearby with Sofia.
The little girl approached.
"Are you my grandpa?"
The old man began to cry.
"Yes."
Sofia smiled.
"Do you like pancakes?"
Everyone laughed.
Even Maria's father.
The darkness that had followed them for years finally began to disappear.
But Daniel knew one thing.
They had survived.
May you like
Now they deserved to live.
And he intended to make sure they did.
