Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Behind the Betrayal

Daniel had spent three months believing his former business partner, Ethan Cole, had betrayed him for money.

Now he realized the truth was far worse.

Ethan hadn't merely stolen company secrets.

He had been working with Gabriel.

The security team captured Ethan before he could reach the safe room.

Daniel watched from the monitor as Ethan was restrained.

"Bring him to the study."

Maria looked frightened.

"You shouldn't."

Daniel turned.

"Why?"

"He'll hurt you."

Daniel almost smiled.

"He already tried."

Ethan was brought into the study.

His expensive suit was torn.

His face was bruised.

But he was smiling.

"You always were difficult to kill."

Daniel sat across from him.

"Why Maria?"

Ethan glanced toward her.

"Because she knows where the bodies are buried."

Maria's face went pale.

Daniel looked at her.

"What does he mean?"

Ethan laughed.

"You really don't know?"

Maria whispered:

"Don't."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Tell me."

Ethan leaned back.

"Northstar wasn't the beginning."

He looked at Maria.

"She found one account."

"Stop."

"But there were others."

Daniel stared at Maria.

She closed her eyes.

"I was twenty-six."

Ethan continued.

"Her father worked for the same financial network."

Maria looked up sharply.

"That's a lie."

"Is it?"

Daniel saw the conflict in her expression.

Ethan smiled.

"Ask her."

Daniel turned to Maria.

"Tell me."

Maria took a shaky breath.

"My father was an accountant."

Daniel waited.

"He worked for several companies connected to Northstar."

"Was he involved?"

"He was."

Silence.

"He helped move money."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did you know?"

"I found out later."

"And?"

"I turned everything over."

Ethan laughed.

"After your father disappeared."

Maria looked at him.

"You killed him."

Daniel froze.

Ethan's smile vanished.

"You don't know that."

Maria's voice shook.

"You threatened him."

"I threatened everyone."

"Then where did he go?"

Ethan said nothing.

Daniel stood.

"Where is her father?"

Ethan stared at him.

Then he smiled.

"Dead."

Maria's knees buckled.

Daniel caught her.

For years, she had believed her father abandoned the family.

Now she learned he might have been murdered.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"Who ordered it?"

Ethan's smile returned.

"Gabriel."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Why?"

"Because her father wanted out."

Daniel looked toward Maria.

She was crying silently.

He had seen people cry before.

But this was different.

This was grief for a man she had spent years resenting because she didn't know the truth.

Daniel crouched beside her.

"Maria."

She shook her head.

"I hate him."

"Your father?"

"No."

She looked at Ethan.

"I hate everyone who knew and let me believe he abandoned us."

Daniel understood.

Then Ethan revealed the final piece.

"Gabriel doesn't want Sofia."

Maria looked up.

"He wants something Sofia has."

"What?"

Ethan smiled.

"A trust."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Whose?"

"Her grandfather's."

Maria froze.

Daniel looked at her.

"Your father left a trust?"

"I didn't know."

Ethan nodded.

"Sofia inherited it."

Maria stared at him.

"What?"

"Your father placed everything he had into a trust for his granddaughter."

Daniel understood immediately.

"How much?"

Ethan smiled.

"Forty-seven million dollars."

Silence.

Maria looked like the number meant nothing.

"Why would my father leave that?"

"Because he knew someone would come after it."

Daniel's mind raced.

Gabriel wasn't pursuing Sofia because of revenge alone.

He wanted her inheritance.

But there was another question.

"Why now?"

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"Because Sofia turns five next month."

Daniel frowned.

"What happens then?"

"The trust becomes accessible."

Maria's face drained of color.

Daniel stood.

"How does Gabriel access it?"

"He can't."

"Then why?"

Ethan smiled.

"Unless he becomes her legal guardian."

Everything clicked.

Gabriel wanted custody.

Not for Sofia.

For the money.

Daniel looked toward Maria.

She was shaking.

He knelt beside her.

"Listen to me."

She looked up.

"He will never get her."

"But the trust—"

"I'll protect it."

"You can't protect everything."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"No."

He took her hand.

"But I can protect you."

Maria stared at their joined hands.

Something changed.

Not dramatically.

Not like a movie.

Just a quiet realization.

She was no longer alone.

Then Sofia appeared in the doorway.

She was holding Bunny.

"Mommy?"

Maria immediately stood.

Sofia ran into her arms.

Daniel watched them.

He knew what he had to do.

He called his attorney.

"Prepare the guardianship documents."

Maria looked at him.

"Daniel?"

"If anything happens to you, Sofia comes to me."

Her eyes widened.

"You would do that?"

Daniel nodded.

"I already think of her as family."

Sofia looked between them.

"Does that mean Mr. Hale is my family?"

Daniel smiled.

"If you want me to be."

Sofia thought for several seconds.

Then she nodded.

"I do."

Daniel's heart broke open.

May you like

For the first time in his life, family wasn't something he had inherited.

It was something he had chosen.
