Chapter 4 - The Man at the Gate

The gates remained closed.

Daniel stood behind the glass doors while security positioned themselves around the property.

Maria held Sofia upstairs.

Daniel had ordered her not to leave the room.

A black SUV stopped outside.

The rear door opened.

A man stepped out.

Gabriel Torres.

He was tall, well dressed, and surprisingly calm.

He looked less like a criminal and more like a wealthy businessman.

That made him more dangerous.

He approached the gate alone.

Daniel met him halfway.

"You've got nerve."

Gabriel smiled.

"I've heard the same about you."

"You should leave."

"I came for my daughter."

"Your daughter doesn't know you."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"That's because Maria stole her from me."

Daniel stepped closer.

"She escaped you."

"That's her version."

"Then why did the court grant her a protective order?"

Gabriel's smile disappeared.

"Because she lied."

Daniel studied him.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You don't look angry."

Gabriel frowned.

"You came here expecting to intimidate me."

Daniel's voice was calm.

"You came expecting me to believe you."

Gabriel said nothing.

Daniel turned.

"Leave."

Gabriel's voice stopped him.

"You don't understand who you're protecting."

Daniel looked back.

Gabriel smiled.

"Ask Maria what happened to her first husband."

Daniel's expression changed.

"I am her first husband."

Gabriel's smile widened.

"No."

Silence.

Then Gabriel turned and walked away.

Daniel watched the vehicles disappear.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

He returned inside.

Maria was waiting.

"What did he say?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"Maria, how many times were you married?"

Her face went pale.

"Once."

"To Gabriel?"

"Yes."

"Then why did he say you had another husband?"

Maria stared at him.

"I don't know."

Daniel studied her.

She looked genuinely confused.

That night, the investigator returned.

He had found a discrepancy.

Maria Torres had not been born Maria Torres.

Her maiden name was Maria Alvarez.

And six years earlier, she had been involved in a financial investigation involving a company called Northstar Holdings.

Daniel knew Northstar.

It had once been one of his father's largest competitors.

"What was she involved in?"

The investigator placed a file on the desk.

"Fraud."

Daniel opened it.

Maria had worked as a junior accountant.

She discovered millions of dollars being diverted through shell companies.

She reported it.

Two weeks later, the company collapsed.

Three executives went to prison.

One disappeared.

And one of them was Gabriel Torres.

Daniel looked up.

"She helped put him away."

"Yes."

"Then why did he get out?"

"Reduced sentence."

Daniel closed the file.

Suddenly everything made sense.

Gabriel didn't want Sofia because he loved her.

He wanted revenge.

Maria wasn't simply a frightened housekeeper.

She had been the woman who destroyed his empire.

Daniel walked upstairs.

Maria was sitting beside Sofia's bed.

The little girl was asleep.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Maria looked up.

"Tell you what?"

"Northstar."

Maria's face fell.

"I was afraid."

"Of me?"

"Of what you'd think."

Daniel sat down.

"You exposed financial fraud."

"I also testified."

"That saved people."

"It destroyed Gabriel's life."

"He destroyed his own life."

Maria looked at Sofia.

"I just wanted to survive."

Daniel's voice softened.

"You did."

She looked at him.

"I don't know how to repay you."

Daniel shook his head.

"You don't have to."

Silence filled the room.

Maria looked at him differently.

Not as an employer.

Not as a billionaire.

As a man.

"Why are you doing this?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because someone should have done it for me when I was young."

Maria's eyes filled.

Neither spoke.

Downstairs, an alarm suddenly sounded.

Daniel stood instantly.

His security chief rushed in.

"Sir!"

"What happened?"

"Someone breached the eastern perimeter."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Where?"

"Near the children's wing."

Maria grabbed Sofia.

Daniel stepped in front of them.

A window shattered downstairs.

Then another.

Security rushed through the hallway.

Daniel heard footsteps.

Someone was inside.

He moved Maria toward the safe room.

"Go."

"What about you?"

"Go."

Maria refused.

"I'm not leaving you."

Daniel looked at her.

For a moment, everything stopped.

Then a gunshot echoed through the house.

Sofia woke screaming.

Daniel grabbed both of them.

"Now."

They ran.

The safe room door slammed shut.

The sound of footsteps approached.

Then stopped.

Silence.

Daniel stared at the security monitor.

A masked man stood outside.

He lifted his head.

And slowly removed his mask.

It was not Gabriel.

It was Daniel's former business partner.

The man Daniel thought had betrayed him for money.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"What the hell?"

The man smiled directly into the camera.

Then he held up a photograph.

Maria.

Sofia.

May you like

Daniel's face went cold.

The betrayal was much bigger than he had imagined.
