Chapter 3 - The Secret in Maria’s Past

Daniel had faced men with guns.

He had survived hostile takeovers designed to destroy his company.

He had watched people he trusted betray him for money.

But nothing prepared him for the fear he saw in Maria's face when she heard the name Gabriel Torres.

"Tell me everything," Daniel said.

Maria sat across from him in the library.

Sofia was upstairs with a nanny.

Maria's hands were folded tightly in her lap.

"I met Gabriel when I was twenty-four."

Daniel listened.

"He was charming."

Her voice carried shame.

"At first."

Daniel said nothing.

"He convinced me he wanted a family. Then he started controlling everything."

Where she went.

Who she spoke to.

What she wore.

Who she could call.

When she could leave the house.

"When I became pregnant, I thought having a baby would change him."

Maria looked down.

"It didn't."

Her voice cracked.

"It made him worse."

Daniel's hands tightened.

"Did he hurt you?"

Maria nodded.

"Many times."

Daniel's expression remained controlled, but something dangerous moved behind his eyes.

"Why didn't you leave?"

"I tried."

She looked toward the window.

"One night, I took Sofia and ran."

She described the motel.

The bus.

The borrowed car.

The months of hiding.

Finally, a shelter helped her obtain a protective order.

Gabriel disappeared.

For years, Maria believed he was gone.

"Then six months ago, I received a letter."

"What did it say?"

"He wanted custody."

Daniel stared at her.

"Did he have legal grounds?"

"No."

"Then why are you afraid?"

Maria looked at him.

"Because Gabriel doesn't need legal grounds."

Daniel understood.

"He has money."

"And friends."

"What kind?"

Maria hesitated.

"The kind who make problems disappear."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Maria, you work for me now."

She nodded.

"Which means if someone threatens you, they threaten my household."

"I don't want to cause problems."

"You aren't."

He paused.

"You and Sofia are not a problem."

Maria looked at him.

Her eyes filled.

Nobody had ever said it quite like that.

That night, Daniel increased the security perimeter.

He also hired a private investigator.

Within forty-eight hours, they discovered something alarming.

Gabriel Torres was not merely alive.

He was wealthy.

Extremely wealthy.

He had built a private security company after leaving prison.

Several of his clients were former criminals.

And three months earlier, he had purchased property less than twenty miles from Daniel's estate.

Daniel stared at the report.

"He's been planning this."

His security chief nodded.

"There is more."

"What?"

"Gabriel has been monitoring Maria for almost a year."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"And Sofia?"

"Yes."

Daniel closed the file.

"Find out what he wants."

The answer arrived sooner than expected.

The next morning, a lawyer appeared at the estate.

He requested to see Maria.

Daniel met him instead.

The lawyer introduced himself as Martin Pierce.

"I'm representing Gabriel Torres."

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"Then you have ten seconds."

Martin smiled nervously.

"Mr. Torres wants to see his daughter."

"No."

"He has parental rights."

"Not after abuse."

Martin's smile disappeared.

"He is willing to settle."

"How much?"

"Two million dollars."

Daniel stared at him.

"For what?"

"Full custody."

Daniel laughed once.

It wasn't a pleasant sound.

"You came to my house and offered Maria two million dollars to give away her child?"

"Mr. Hale—"

"Leave."

Martin stood.

Before he reached the door, Daniel spoke.

"And tell Gabriel something."

The lawyer stopped.

"His daughter is not for sale."

Martin left.

Maria entered minutes later.

"What happened?"

Daniel told her.

She started crying.

"I can't lose Sofia."

Daniel stood.

"You won't."

"You can't promise that."

"I can promise I'm going to fight."

Maria looked at him.

"Why?"

Daniel paused.

Because the answer was becoming uncomfortable.

Because Sofia's laugh had started filling rooms that once felt dead.

Because Maria's quiet presence had changed the atmosphere of his house.

Because he had started looking forward to hearing her say good morning.

Because he had begun to care.

"I don't know yet," he admitted.

Maria wiped her eyes.

"Thank you."

Daniel nodded.

Then he saw Sofia standing in the doorway.

The little girl was holding Bunny.

"Mr. Hale?"

"Yes?"

"Is my daddy coming?"

Maria froze.

Daniel crouched.

"I don't know."

Sofia's eyes lowered.

"Is he bad?"

Daniel looked at Maria.

Then back at Sofia.

"Sometimes adults make bad choices."

"Does that mean they're bad forever?"

Daniel had no answer.

Sofia hugged Bunny.

"I hope not."

Daniel felt something crack inside him.

Because he had spent his entire life believing people never changed.

And yet this little girl still believed they could.

That night, Daniel couldn't sleep.

He walked into the living room.

The small blanket was still folded on the sofa.

He picked it up.

He remembered Sofia whispering:

People sleep better when somebody loves them.

For the first time, Daniel wondered whether she had been right.

Then his phone rang.

His security chief.

"Sir."

"What?"

"We found Gabriel."

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"Where?"

A pause.

"He's outside the estate."

Daniel looked toward the dark windows.

And then he saw headlights.

One.

Two.

Three black vehicles.

May you like

Moving slowly toward the gates.

Gabriel had come.
