Chapter 8 - The Truth Daniel Never Knew

The attorney arrived at Daniel's office with a sealed file.

"There is something you need to see."

Daniel opened it.

His father's signature appeared on the first page.

Daniel froze.

"What is this?"

"A private agreement."

Between Daniel's father and Northstar.

Daniel read the documents.

His father had known about the illegal financial network.

Worse.

He had invested in it.

Daniel's entire fortune had unknowingly been built partly from money connected to the same organization that had destroyed Maria's family.

Daniel felt sick.

Maria entered.

She saw his face.

"What happened?"

He handed her the file.

She read it.

Silence.

"I didn't know."

"I know."

"But your father—"

"Was a terrible man."

Daniel closed the file.

"That's not an excuse."

Maria looked at him.

"What are you going to do?"

Daniel answered immediately.

"Expose everything."

"But it could destroy your company."

"I don't care."

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"I spent my entire life believing money could protect me from becoming my father."

He smiled sadly.

"Maybe the only way to become different is to stop protecting the money."

Daniel called his board.

He announced a full independent investigation into the company's historical finances.

It would cost him hundreds of millions.

His reputation would suffer.

But he didn't hesitate.

Within weeks, the investigation uncovered corruption dating back decades.

Daniel cooperated with federal authorities.

Several executives were arrested.

His company survived.

Barely.

But something else happened.

The public learned about Maria.

Not as a maid.

Not as a victim.

As the woman who had exposed one of the largest financial crimes in the region.

Offers poured in.

Universities invited her to speak.

Financial firms offered jobs.

Maria refused most of them.

She wanted something simpler.

She wanted to finish her degree.

Daniel helped her enroll.

"Are you sure?"

She asked him.

"I'm not paying for it."

He smiled.

"I'm investing in you."

Maria laughed.

"You sound like a billionaire."

"I am a billionaire."

"Unfortunately."

They laughed.

Their relationship slowly changed.

There was no dramatic proposal.

No sudden declaration.

Just small moments.

Coffee in the morning.

Sofia's school events.

Sunday dinners.

Long conversations.

One evening, Maria found Daniel standing beside the lake.

"You okay?"

He nodded.

"I'm thinking."

"About?"

"Family."

Maria stepped beside him.

"That's new."

Daniel smiled.

"I used to think family was whoever shared your blood."

"And now?"

He looked at her.

"Whoever stays."

Maria's eyes filled.

She leaned her head against his shoulder.

Daniel kissed her forehead.

Nothing more.

It was enough.

Until Sofia came running down the hill.

"Mommy!"

They turned.

She was holding a small envelope.

"I got mail!"

Maria took it.

There was no return address.

Inside was one sentence.

Gabriel wasn't working alone.

Daniel's expression changed.

Maria looked at him.

"He's in prison."

"I know."

"Then who sent this?"

Daniel turned the envelope over.

There was a symbol embossed in black.

A symbol he recognized.

His father's private investment group.

The organization was supposed to have disappeared decades ago.

May you like

But someone was still operating it.

And they were watching Daniel.
