Chapter 9 - Rooting Out the Poison

The fallout from the gala attack was swift and merciless. Rebecca didn't just let the police handle it; she used her immense wealth to dismantle Mark’s remaining network entirely.
Arthur Vance worked alongside federal investigators to uncover the corrupt prison guards who had helped Mark smuggle out messages. By the end of the week, six prison officials were indicted, and Mark was moved to a supermax facility—an isolated underground cell with zero human contact, no visitation privileges, and twenty-four-hour surveillance. He was completely, irrevocably buried alive in the legal system.
Rebecca visited the prison one final time before Mark was transferred to the supermax facility. She stood behind the thick bulletproof glass, looking at the man who had once been her husband. He looked skeletal, his eyes hollowed out by madness and defeat.
He picked up the phone. "You think you won, Rebecca? I will haunt you forever."
Rebecca didn't pick up her phone. She simply looked at him through the glass, her expression one of profound pity. She didn't need to speak. She held up a small, framed photograph against the glass.

It was a picture of Leo and Diana, laughing on a beach, holding Jonathan’s hands while Rebecca smiled radiantly beside them. They looked like a complete, joyful, and unbreakable family.
Mark stared at the photo. The realization that he had been completely erased from their lives, that his children would grow up calling another, better man 'Father,' was the ultimate blow. He began to scream, slamming his fists against the glass, but Rebecca simply turned her back on him and walked away into the light, leaving him to his self-inflicted madness.
