Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Final Strike

Two years passed in blissful serenity. Rebecca’s hotel empire reached new heights, expanding internationally with a focus on ethical corporate governance and philanthropy. Leo and Diana were toddlers now, taking their first steps across the sunlit halls of the mansion. Jonathan had become a permanent fixture in their lives, acting as a loving, protective presence.

However, malice has a way of festering in the dark.

Inside the state penitentiary, Mark Holden had spent every waking hour obsessing over his defeat. He had used what little hidden resources he had left—favors owed by old, corrupt associates outside the prison walls—to orchestrate one final, desperate act of revenge. He knew he would never get out, but he wanted to ensure Rebecca never smiled again.

It happened during a high-profile charity gala hosted at the flagship Moore Hotel downtown. The grand ballroom was packed with dignitaries, celebrities, and press.

Rebecca was on stage, delivering a speech about her new foundation for vulnerable mothers, when the fire alarms suddenly shrieked. The lights cut out completely, plunging the massive ballroom into darkness and chaos.

"Rebecca!" Jonathan’s voice cut through the panic from the side of the stage.

Before Rebecca could move, a figure lunged at her from the wings of the stage. It was a hired operative, a man disguised as a security guard, wielding a blade. Mark hadn't ordered a kidnapping; he had ordered an execution.

But Rebecca was no longer the naive woman who mistook strategy for love. She had spent the last two years training in personal defense, ensuring she would never be helpless again.

As the assassin lunged, Rebecca sidestepped with fluid grace. She grabbed his wrist, twisting it sharply until the blade clattered to the stage floor. Jonathan arrived a second later, tackling the assailant to the ground and pinning him down until the hotel’s actual security team flooded the stage with flashlights.

The assassin was arrested on the spot. Within hours, he cracked under interrogation, confessing that Mark Holden had ordered the hit from inside his cell.
