Chapter 2 - The Double-Edged Inheritance

Dr. Jonathan did not look like a man who had just delivered two healthy babies; he looked like a judge reading a death sentence. He ignored Agnes’s greedy, trembling hands and reached into his lab coat pocket, pulling out a sealed black envelope.

"Rebecca knew this day would come," Dr. Jonathan said, his voice echoing in the sterile room. "She left explicit instructions. If she survived, this was to be destroyed. If she did not, it was to be read immediately upon the birth of her children. In front of legal counsel."

"Legal counsel?" Mark’s voice cracked. The charm that usually coated his words like honey was completely gone, replaced by a jagged edge of panic. "My wife just died, doctor. I am her husband. I am the legal executioner of her estate. Give me the children, and give me that letter."

"I’m afraid I cannot do that, Mr. Holden," a new voice broke in from the doorway.

Mark whipped around. Standing there was Arthur Vance, the Moore family’s chief legal counsel for the last thirty years. He was a silver-haired shark in a bespoke suit, and he looked at Mark with pure disdain. Beside him were two uniform security guards.

"What is the meaning of this, Arthur?" Agnes hissed, stepping in front of her son defensively. "This is a private family matter. Our beloved Rebecca is gone. We need to grieve."

"The only thing you are going to grieve, Agnes, is your bank account," Arthur said coldly. He took the black envelope from Dr. Jonathan, broke the wax seal, and pulled out a document.

"According to the revised ironclad trust executed by Rebecca Moore exactly three months ago," Arthur read, "in the event of her death during childbirth, her entire estate—including the Holden-Moore hotel empire, the properties, the liquid assets, and the family trusts—is placed into an unassailable blind trust for her children."

Claire, standing in the back, felt her knees go weak. "But Mark is the father. He becomes the legal guardian of the children, which means he controls the trust!"

"Ah, Miss Dawson," Arthur smiled, though there was no warmth in it. "Still acting as the diligent assistant, I see. Or should I say, the mistress waiting in the wings? To answer your question: No. Rebecca anticipated that. The trust explicitly states that if the children are twins, the estate is split equally, but neither child can be touched, managed, or influenced by Mark Holden."

Mark took a step forward, his fists clenched. "That’s illegal! I am their biological father!"

"And you are also completely disqualified," Arthur countered, pulling a secondary document from his briefcase. "Rebecca signed a conditional clause. If any evidence of spousal abuse, endangerment, or infidelity was uncovered posthumously, custody of the children would automatically revert to a court-appointed guardian—myself—and a full criminal investigation would be launched. Dr. Jonathan has already preserved the toxicology reports from Rebecca’s blood work over the last four months. We know about the 'vitamins,' Mark."

The room became suffocatingly quiet. The long, piercing tone of the heart monitor that had signaled Rebecca's flatline seemed to echo in their ears. Mark looked at his mother, whose face was now a pale, sweating mask of horror.

"You have no proof," Mark whispered, though his confidence was shattered.

"We have enough to freeze every single one of your accounts starting right now," Arthur said. "You will leave this hospital. You will not touch these children. And if you attempt to flee the city, the police will arrest you at the border."

As the security guards stepped forward to escort them out, Mark looked back at the two infants in the incubator. They weren't his golden ticket; they were the iron bars of a prison cell closing around him.
