Chapter 5 - The Fragile Light of Morning

Back at St. Jude’s Medical Center, the atmosphere in the high-security recovery suite was entirely different. The blinding purple and white grow lights of the medical equipment hummed softly, casting a calm, artificial glow over the room.
Khloe lay in the bed, her face still pale but her breathing now steady. The steroid injections had done their work, and her uterus had finally relaxed, stopping the premature labor contractions that had threatened her child’s life just twelve hours earlier. A series of small blue monitors hung over her bed, displaying a beautiful, rhythmic sound: thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.
The baby’s heartbeat. Strong. Resilient. Unbroken.
The door pushed open quietly, and Marcus stepped into the room. The cold, lethal CEO who had just destroyed a senior executive in a high-rise boardroom vanished instantly. He looked exhausted, his broad shoulders slumping as he walked over to his wife's bedside.
Khloe opened her eyes, a soft, tired smile touching her lips as she reached out her hand. "Hey," she whispered.
Marcus caught her hand, sinking onto the edge of the mattress and burying his face in her palm. His shoulders shook slightly as the absolute terror he had been holding back since the previous night finally cracked through his armor.
"I’m sorry, Khloe," he murmured against her skin, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "I let them into our circle. I let that monster get near you because I was focused on the global numbers. I almost lost you both."
Khloe used her fingers to gently lift his chin, looking deep into his bloodshot, silver-gray eyes. "Marcus, look at me. We are here. Our baby is fighting. You didn't do this—Isabella did. And she did it because she couldn't break us with her whispers."
"She’s never going to whisper again," Marcus said, his jaw tightening as he kissed her knuckles. "Julian Vance has been arrested. He was the one feeding her information. And my legal team has filed a multi-billion-dollar racketeering lawsuit against Victor Rossi. They are finished, Khloe. Completely finished."
The door opened slightly, and Thomas Vance stepped in, carrying a small folder. He looked at the couple, his kind face lined with a mix of relief and professional gravity.
"The District Attorney just finalized the formal charges against Isabella Rossi," Thomas reported softly. "Because of the security footage we provided, the judge denied bail entirely. She’s being held at the women's correctional facility in South Boston until trial. Her father tried to fly in his top defense attorneys from New York, but when they saw the video of her kicking you... they dropped the case within twenty minutes. They know it's a losing battle."

Khloe let out a long, shuddering breath, her hand resting on her stomach where the baby kicked softly—a reassuring sign of life. "What about Victor Rossi? He won't just let his daughter stay in jail without a fight."
"Victor Rossi is currently watching his entire empire collapse," Marcus said, his voice returning to its hard, executive tone. "He’s desperate. And when a man like Victor gets desperate, he makes mistakes. I’m waiting for him to make his."
